1. Synology Photos 1.8.1 requires DSM 7.2 and above.

Bug Fixed

1. Fixed an issue where face recognition failed to function properly for some users.
2. Fixed an issue in version 1.8.0 where videos moved from Personal Space to Shared Space might not display properly in Timeline View.
3. Fixed an issue where the Synology Photos web portal might get stuck at the repairing status after updating to version 1.8.0 when the Synology NAS has a large number of user accounts.
4. Fixed an issue where identical folder names might interrupt backup.
5. Fixed an issue where Hyper Backup was unable to properly back up and restore settings of album covers. This fix will apply to album cover created after updating the package to this version or above.
6. Fixed an issue where new photos might not be automatically added to conditional albums sourced from Shared Space.
7. Fixed an issue where downloading items from shared albums might cause an error.

This update was recalled on 2025/07/23, due to the identified issue that may cause Synology Photos to malfunction.

What's New

1. Supports using Synology Image Assistant to view HEIC photos and HEVC (H.265) videos that are newly uploaded through the Synology Photos web portal, File Station, or SMB. This improves the efficiency of media file processing while reducing unnecessary server resource usage.
   
   Synology Image Assistant is available on computers and phones:

• Windows/macOS: Synology Image Assistant works as a browser extension (for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari) and a desktop app*, and both must be installed. This toolkit can generate additional JPEG previews and compressed videos for HEIC, HEVC, and other less-compatible formats.
• iOS/Android: Image Assistant is a function in the latest Synology Photos mobile app, which can resolve display issues by generating additional JPEG previews for newly added HEIC and HEVC formats, regardless of how they were uploaded.
  
  For more information about the Synology Image Assistant toolkit, please refer to this tutorial.
  
  *Depending on your setup, you may need to update to Windows 11 version 22H2 or purchase the HEVC Video Extensions from Microsoft.

1. As support for media codecs is widespread on end devices such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart TVs, Synology Photos will offload media processing of HEIC photos and HEVC (H.265) videos from Synology NAS to the client devices starting from this version.

1. Synology Photos 1.7.0 requires DSM 7.2.2 and above.
2. Starting with this version, you will need to install Synology Image Assistant to view HEIC photos and HEVC (H.265) videos that are newly uploaded through the Synology Photos web portal, File Station, or SMB. Otherwise, these files may not display properly in the web portal and TV app. Nevertheless, HEIC and HEVC files uploaded or backed up through the Synology Photos mobile app are unaffected and will continue to display correctly.
