  • What will happen to my backup on Active Backup for Server if updated to Active Backup for Business?

      All the backup tasks created on Active Backup for Server will remaine as they were when upgrading to Active Backup for Business. These tasks can be found, managed, and edited under the category, File Server.
      The only thing that will be changed to your tasks is the type of server. We changed the device type from Windows Server and Linux Server to SMB server and rsync server, respectively, to avoid any misunderstanding.

    What kind of device operating system will be supported?

      For personal computers, only  Windows 7 and later are currently supported. For physical servers, only  Windows 7 and later and Windows server 2008 R2 and later are currently supported.
      For file servers, the servers running SMB (Windows) and rsync 3.0 or above (Linux) protocol are supported.
      For virtual machines, only VMware vSphere is currently supported and VMware vSphere 5.5 and later are supported. In the near future, VMware vSphere 4.1, 5.0, and 5.1 will also be supported.

    For running the backed up device on Synology Virtual Machine Manager, what’s the minimum NAS requirement?

      To run a backed up device on Synology Virtual Machine Manager (VMM), the minimum requirement is 4G RAM. For more information regardinge Synology VMM, you may refer to the VMM hardware requirement.

    Is there any NAS limitation or requirement?

      Yes, a NAS device running DSM 6.1.6 or above is required and only x64 Synology NAS servers and Btrfs file system are supported. Since global deduplication consumes memory, it’s suggested to have at least 4G RAM to run up to ten concurrent backup devices.

    Is the package free or is a license required?

      During the beta period, no license will be required and software will have all functionality available. After the beta period, a license will be required to continue the service.

    What’s the restoration method of each device?

      Active Backup for Business supports four ways of restoring depending on the type of device under different circumstances.
      • Granular restore: No matter which device it is (personal computers, physical servers, file servers, or virtual machines), individual file restoration is supported through Active Backup for Business Portal.
      • Bare-metal restore (Coming Soon): Active Backup for Business will also support bare-metal and system volume restore when releasing its official version. The restoration will be carried out through recovery media.
      • System-volume restore (Coming Soon): If you wish to restore a system volume, recovery media is needed. Please note that if you choose to restore only a system volume, the other existing volumes on the target device will be emptied. This restore option will be supported in the official release of Active Backup for Business.
      • Instant VM restore: For virtual machines, when the downtime tolerance is low, it is possible to perform an instant VM restore by mounting the image onto the hypervisor through NFS.
      • Full VM restore: Backed up images that of VMs are supported to be entirely restored to the original hypervisor or a new virtual destination. 
      • Power on Synology Virtual Machine Manager (VMM): Backed up images of VMs and physical servers can be imported and powered on by Synology Virtual Machine Manager. This feature can be applied to many business scenarios; for example, serving as an alternative solution for disaster recovery, an environment for upgrade testing, or restoring objects or metadata using native import and export tools in the application.

    How do I migrate the device back to the production site after running it on Synology Virtual Machine Manager?

      You may choose to export the VM running on Synology VMM to OVA file and then import the OVA file back to VMware.

    Can I back up the Active Backup for Business data to another device to have a second copy?

      The backup copy feature is not supported now and it’s not recommended to do so through any software since the global deduplication technology may not work on another copy. The space you save on duplicated data will be added when you back up the Active Backup for Business data to another device.

    What would happen to the backed up data if I delete the task, device, or uninstall the package? 

      The previously backed up data will also be deleted when the task or device is deleted. When a package is about to be uninstalled, you can choose in the uninstall wizard whether you wish to remove all the backup configurations.
  • What is the difference between file server and physical server backup?

      Active Backup for Business supports two methods of server backup: file-based backup and image-based backup. If you wish to backup a certain directory of your file server, which means file-based backup, then we’d suggest you to create a backup task under the category “File Server“. On the other hand, if you wish to protect the entire server or an entire volume on the server, so that one day you can restore the service through Instant VM restore or mount the image on Synology Virtual Machine Manager when in urgent need, we’d then suggest you to create a task for these servers under the category “Physical Server“.

      And for now, we only support file-based backup on servers exchanging through the rsync, SMB protocol. 

    Where can I enable the Changed Block Tracking (CBT)?

      For a smoother and faster backup experience, CBT is enabled by default so it would be a forever incremental backup from the second backup. Since the CBT technology mainly depends on the native VSS service from Windows, please make sure the VSS service is activated on the target device.
  • Will VMware free ESXi be supported?

      Yes, VMware free ESXi will be supported but users will need to enable the SSH port manually before creating a backup task.

    Is it ok if I use the data store of other brand on my production site?

      It doesn’t matter which data store you use on your production site. No matter which brand it is or in which format (SAN, local data store or iSCSI), the only limitation of virtual hardware is listed on the help documentation. You may refer to the Active Backup for Business help article > Requirements and limitations to learn more.

    If I don’t have a vCenter license or vSphere license with the vMotion feature, can I still use instant VM restore? 

      Yes, you may still use instant VM restore, but if you want to perform live VM migrations when you want to migrate the VM back to the production site, you will need to have an eligible vCenter license and vSphere license with the vMotion feature. If you do not have a vCenter and vSphere license, you may choose to migrate the VM back to the production site by powering off the VM and cloning the VM.

    Is Hyper-V supported?

      No, Active Backup for Business only supports VMware vSphere now, but Hyper-V support is on our road map. 

    What is instant VM restore? What’s the difference between this and full VM restore?

      Instant VM restore allows users to instantly restart the service since it mounts the backed up image on NAS through the NFS protocol. Instant VM restore doesn’t transfer the backed up data back to the data store of the production site but merely leverages Synology NAS as another data store of the hypervisor and powers on the service.
      While full VM restore does transfer the backed up data back to the data store of the production site, it takes more time to bring the service back compared with instant VM restore. 

Active Backup for Business license

A license will not be required during the beta period and the software will have full functionality. Licenses are required for different protection plans based on device. More details are to come in the near future.
