How do I back up and relink Active Backup for Business data to a destination Synology NAS?

How do I back up and relink Active Backup for Business data to a destination Synology NAS?

Details

You can utilize built-in services on your Synology NAS to make copies of your Active Backup for Business data in case of an IT disaster.

  • If you have multiple Synology NAS, you can use Snapshot Replication to replicate data.
  • If you only have one NAS, you can use Hyper Backup to back up data to the cloud or other storage media.

We suggest implementing the 3-2-1 backup strategy (3 copies; 2 storage mediums; 1 offsite).

This tutorial shows you how to back up and relink Active Backup for Business data using Snapshot Replication and Hyper Backup.1 2 3

Environment

Make sure your Synology NAS has 64-bit processors and is running DSM 6.1.7 or above and Active Backup for Business 2.0.4 or above.

Resolution

Notes:

  1. Cloud Sync and Synology Drive can't be used to sync or back up Active Backup for Business data due to the possibility of data inconsistencies.
  2. We don't recommend using Shared Folder Sync in DSM to sync or back up Active Backup for Business data because the global deduplication technology is not compatible with it. Using this service might consume more storage space on your destination NAS.
  3. Due to limitations in backing up metadata, we do not recommend using Hyper Backup if your Active Backup for Business folder contains file server data.
  4. If you want to resume the connections after data relinking, you need to enter the following:
    • The credentials for any VMware vSphere Hypervisors in Active Backup for Business > Virtual Machine.
    • The credentials in the Active Backup for Business Agent on your personal computers and physical servers (if the original and new Synology NAS have different IP addresses, usernames, or passwords).
    • The credentials for Active Backup for Business Agent 2.0.3-0472 or earlier on your personal computers and physical servers.
  5. Before you restore your data, make sure no folders share the same name as the shared folder you're restoring on your volume to avoid overwriting the backup data.
  6. To continue using the same backup task after relinking, the UID (User ID) of the account on the source NAS, used to sign in to the agent on your computer, must match the UID of the account on the destination NAS.
