My Internet is slow. What can I do?
My Internet is slow. What can I do?
Symptoms
Your wired client devices within a Synology Router's network get lower speeds than your ISP (Internet Service Provider) provided.
Resolution
Follow the steps below to diagnose your issue with wired connectivity.
A. Simplify your environment
- Go to SRM Package Center to temporarily stop Download Station (if installed), and check if the issue is resolved.
- Check if the issue results from the other devices occupying the network bandwidth by connecting only one client device to your Synology Router.
- Check if the issue results from the Wi-Fi connection you previously set up by disabling Wi-Fi on your client device.
- Check if the issue results from the switches or other routers between your device and Synology Router by connecting your client device directly to the Synology Router.
B. Test with different websites
Check if the speed issue is only diagnosed by a specific website by testing the network speed using different websites. Some recommended websites for speed tests:
C. Adjust SRM settings
Traffic control, traffic monitoring, and TTL (time to live) settings on your Synology Router stop network acceleration and may reduce transmission speed. You can follow the steps below to adjust these settings depending on your needs:
- Traffic control/monitor:
- Disable traffic control at Network Center > Traffic Control > Advanced > Settings.
- Disable the traffic monitor at Network Center > Traffic Control > Monitor > Settings > Record traffic statistics.1
- Go to Network Center > Traffic Control > General. Check if any Custom Speed settings are being applied to your client device.
- TTL: Disable the TTL settings at Network Center > Internet > Connection> ISP Settings.2
D. Troubleshoot hardware issues
Connect to another LAN port of Synology Router
Check if the issue results from the LAN port you previously used by connecting your client device to another LAN port of Synology Router.
Change another Ethernet cable
Check if the issue results from the cable you previously used by connecting your device with another Ethernet cable. A defective Ethernet cable may lead to unstable connections and low transmission speed.
Connect via another device
Check if the issue is with the device you were previously using by testing the network speed using another device.
Connect to the parent router
Determine if the problem is with your Synology Router by connecting your device directly to the Synology Router's parent router or modem (if you have one). If the Internet works fine without the Synology Router, you can try cloning the MAC address of the working device.
To clone the MAC address, go to Network Center > Internet > Connection > ISP Settings.
If the issue persists after you have tried all the methods above, contact Synology Technical Support for further diagnosis and provide the following information:
- The methods you have tried, including the settings you have adjusted no matter if they worked or not.
- System logs.3
Notes:
- You will need to delete the existing traffic report tasks before disabling traffic monitoring.
- Some ISPs may require TTL settings to be enabled. Please check with your ISP before disabling them.
- Go to the Support Center > Support Services, tick System, and click Generate logs. Then, attach the downloaded "debug.dat" file to the technical support ticket.
