Dear Synology It is important to give feed-back also when it is positive - so here it is: Around a year ago I purchased a Disk Station 101 as my private server and quite soon after I bought two more for my brewery, pub and restaurant in Copenhagen. From the very beginning I was satisfied with the boxes. They have been 100% reliable and even the old firmware has served its purposes. Now 3 or 4 SW versions later the machines are getting more and more advanced and it seems you are really determent to develop this box. I sincerely want to thank you for your products. It is very rare one meet a company with such a high commitment for improvements - for products already very good and mature from day one. Thanks Synology!

Then a nightmare get started with hard- and firmware related malfunctions, specification deviations, piles of e-mails with supplier/manufacturer etc. Today, a week after purchase, I´m really really satisfied with my third bought NAS which is a Synology DiskStation DS-101g+ equipped with a HDD (400GB) from WesternDigital designated Caviar WD4000KD. They works fine together.

A cheap solution so I decided to buy and test it. I have had it for some months now, and it's still running perfectly. I use the shared folder, ftp and download part in it. But now, with all the new features (UPnP, Web Server with PHP and MySQL...), I am thrilled and fascinated!! I got my own DS-106e up and running. Already when I took it out of the box, it was a great thing to watch. The design is very nice, and small, which is perfect. I installed my hard drive and I got it to work in just 10 minutes. It's easy and fast. After another 10 minutes I got the whole thing up and running with all its futures. I have been using it for a week now and I haven't had any problem, it just a great device to work with. Thought there is some noise when the hard drive is in use. But luckily enough it has a great hibernation option which will change the device in a small quiet server. The support from Synology is as good as the product itself! I think the need of a storage solution in private households has increased enormously after having internet flat rates, digital cams and so on. Buying new hard disks doesn’t solve the problem and burning data on CD or DVD is a rather bad idea because you have to test the burned disc if the data was burned correctly, you have to put them somewhere they don’t get scratched and after some years CD aren’t readable anymore. Most NAS (Network attached Storage) support RAID and are a good investment for archiving your data or creating a multimedia streaming server. After evaluating the market of NAS I found two interesting NAS products with RAID 5. One was the Tera Station from Buffalo and the other one was the Cube Station of Synology. The Tera Station needs a lot of power and is noisy and has a really old version of Samba. The Cube Station doesn’t look as cool as the Tera Station but you have great functionality like printing server, web server, database, photo album, streaming capability and lots more. Well, the total cost of the Cube Station without any hard disk equals to the total costs of the Tera Station with 1 TB already included. I decided to buy 4 really silent hard disks of Samsung in combination with the Cube Station CS-406. The Cube Station-Series looks like an air conditioner, but its functionality is great. I feel really relaxed thinking on working for my diploma thesis. Saving the work on the NAS is quite safe. With this RAID server I don’t have to worry about a hard disk crash." I recently purchased a CS-406e and after putting in the hard drives which only took a few minutes, I plugged the unit into my switch and put the disk in the server, moments later the software had done its thing, mapped the drive automatically and I went to my back up software in this case it is Veritas BackUp Exec, all I had to do was choose a different location to back up to, from the tandberg tape drive to a back up folder that was on the new array of disks on your cube.. and blamo! I was backing up... This was awesome I can now hold 14 days of complete backups on a RAID level 5 structure. Then I put one more across the plant in another building for redundancy… this is a network with out internet access but with the security of off site backup... Very cool... We are a ready mix concrete plant and tapes just don’t cut it in this industry, no matter how clean you try to be dust gets in.. Its the nature of the business and when I got a hold of your product I was stoked... These boxes rock! And we know rocks... Tnx, Jody Harrison

Recently our firm had a major server breakdown, which we were very fortunate enough to recover from. Our local computer store (Sneakers Computers Ltd.) owner recommended the Synology DS-101 as a temporary server while he rebuilt our new server. Upon having our new server operational he recommended we continue to use the DS-101 as a backup solution. It has preformed so well that I am now in the process of setting up a mirrored backup at home on my second DS-101. I have recommended it to friends and colleagues throughout my industry. I just retuned from Sneakers Computers with another DS-101 for a friend in Calgary, as he is unable to find your product available there. In speaking with Ron Burton of Sneakers Computers today I have found out that he only has 1 unit remaining and is unable to acquire any more DS-101. As your product is so reliable and easy to use I am sure it will become even more popular with computer users as servers and/or backup solutions. I only hope that Sneakers Computers will be able to become a local distributor for Vancouver Island or Western Canada as he has been a great supporter of the DS-101. Best regards, Bal Klear
