Yeng Hsingh Co., Ltd.

"After we confirmed its backup and recovery features, we started to deploy this software to 23 clients. Say each computer has 80GB of data and system files, it's supposed to take up around 1.85TB after a complete backup task. However, thanks to the built-in deduplication technology in Active Backup for Business (ABB), it only took up 600GB and saved the storage space by at least 68%. We are satisfied with the overall performance and willing to deploy it to more client PCs." Zhang, Zhi-Zhong, Deputy Manager of Information Center at Yeng Hsingh

The Company

Founded in 1981, Yeng Hsingh Corporation is a chemical manufacturer selling products such as calcium carbonate, thermoplastic road marking and castable refractory materials. The headquarters is located in Xizhi District, New Taipei City, while its production base is located at the Yongan Industrial Park, providing modernized automatic feeding, grinding, ultrafine particle measuring, and computerized management for quality inspection and packaging system.

The Challenge

In response to rapid business growth, Yeng Hsingh has purchased various Synology storage devices aimed at different information applications and established a complete backup architecture to deal with unexpected disasters or human errors. Limited by a tight budget, Yeng Hsingh couldn’t afford backup software for client PCs, so they used virtual folders in Windows to allow each client PC to connect automatically to the corresponding volume in the file server, serving the purpose of protecting critical data. However, there was still room for improvement. Over the years, Yeng Hsingh has been satisfied with the reliability and availability from Synology storage devices. Introduced to ABB by Synology sales, Yeng Hsingh realized that it can back up all the data stored on client PCs, virtual machines, and Windows servers to a NAS, without any license fees. They joined the beta program in June 2018 and went on a 3-month trial.

Zhang, Zhi-Zhong, Deputy Manager of Information Center at Yeng Hsingh said, “a client-side backup software license in the market costs around NT$1,000, so we have to spend NT$100,000 every year for 100 PCs, and that will undoubtedly affect other important projects. By contrast, ABB does not require license fees and can centrally back up cross-platform data, which prompted us to give Active Backup for Business a try. We have successfully backed up 20 PCs so far.”

The Solution

Effectively deduplicate data & save 68 % storage space

In the past, businesses usually had to pay costly license fees to back up client-side data. They also had to calculate the storage capacity of the client PCs in advance before purchasing suitable storage devices to prevent a lack of space from happening. To this end, Synology Active Backup for Business can back up PCs, virtual machines, and Windows Server, and deduplicate data — effectively enhancing storage usage efficiency while cutting down on hardware acquisition costs.

Zhang said that after confirming ABB's backup and recovery features, they started to deploy it to 23 clients. Suppose each computer has 80GB of data and system files, it should take up 1.85TB to complete a backup task. However, thanks to the built-in deduplication technology in ABB, it only took up 600GB and saved the space by at least 68%. They are satisfied with the overall performance, and willing to deploy it to more client PCs.

Integrate AD for painless deployment & shorten backup time by 88%

Aside from the above-mentioned data deduplication feature, Active Backup for Business agent and Microsoft Active Directory can work together to enable rapid deployment. It also provides template settings for admins to design desired policies in advance, so backup tasks can be created according to the policy. Therefore, they can perform a backup task once the device is connected to the NAS — greatly reducing IT workloads.

Synology Active Backup for Business also allows client PCs to make a bootable USB, so when system crashes occur, they can restore the files and folders on the PC in the shortest time possible, helping IT shorten troubleshooting times so they focus on more important projects. Take Yeng Hsingh Corporation as an example. In the past, it usually took 4 hours to restore client-side data; however, it only takes less than half an hour to restore all the data with Synology Active Backup for Business.

Zhang said that laptops have a higher failure rate than desktop PCs, so they need a more comprehensive backup solution. The UI of Synology Active Backup for Business is very intuitive, so there were nearly no problems when employees tried to restore data on their own. Therefore, Yeng Hsingh IT Department will create a bootable USB for each employee so that when system crashes occur, they can restore data on their own and therefore proceed with important business.

The Benefits

Compared to traditional industries, Yeng Hsingh has made a sizable investment in their IT infrastructure and is willing to adopt innovative technologies. However, limited by a tight budget in the past, they were plagued by not having suitable backup software. Things have changed for the better after using Synology Active Backup for Business that integrates software with hardware. They have established a complete backup architecture for many employees, and they will continue deploying ABB to the whole company, which sets a good example for other companies to follow.
