How to access files stored on DiskStation with DS file

Overview

DS file is an app designed for iOS devices (iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad), allowing you to access and manage files stored on your DiskStation whenever a network connection is available. Besides, you can always browse your important documents which have been pre-downloaded on your iOS devices even when the Internet connection is out. This article will guide you through the process of installing and using DS file.

1. Before You Start

Before you start to share data within the Internet, make sure you have completed the following tasks:

  • Hardware installation for Synology DiskStation
  • Software installation for Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM, web-based operating system of DiskStation)
  • Set up a volume and create a shared folder (See here)
  • Create a users with access privileges (See here)
  • Grant DSM users’ WebDAV application privileges (See here)
  • Enable WebDAV on your DiskStation (See here)

2. Download and Install DS file from App Store

DS file can be downloaded via your iOS device or the iTunes application on your computer.

To download DS file via your iOS device:

  1. Tap Apple Store on the Home screen.

  2. Tap Search at the bottom, enter "DS file" in the search field and tap Search. On the list of search result, tap DS file.

  3. Tap FREE and then tap INSTALL to install DS file on your iOS device.

To download DS file via iTunes on your computer:

  1. Open iTunes, click iTunes Store under STORE in the sidebar.

  2. Click the App Store tab to go to App Store.
  3. Enter "DS file" in the search field at the top-right corner, and press Enter on your keyboard.
  4. When the search is complete, you can see DS file in the main section. Click the FREE button to download DS file.
  5. Tap X at the top-left corner to leave App Store.

  6. Click Apps under LIBRARY in the sidebar. If DS file is successfully downloaded, it will be shown in the main section.

  7. Connect your iOS device to your computer, and click the name of the device under DEVICES in the sidebar.
  8. Under the Apps tab, tick Sync Apps and then tick DS file.
  9. Click Apply at the bottom-right corner to install DS file to your iOS device.

3. Manage DiskStation Files with DS file

After DS file is installed on your iOS device, you can see its icon on the Home screen. Tap the icon to launch DS file.

Important: DS file connects to your DiskStation through the WebDAV protocol. Before launching DS file on your iOS device, make sure you have enabled WebDAV on your DiskStation. See here for more information.

To access DiskStation shared folders with DS file:

  1. On the login screen, enter DiskStation's IP address (or domain name) and your user credentials, and then click Log in.

  2. Now you can see DiskStation's shared folders. Tap any of the shared folders to see the list of files or sub-folders.

To upload a file to DiskStation with DS file:

  1. Browse to a destination folder on Synology DiskStation. The folder could be a shared folder or a sub-folder in the shared folder.
  2. Tap + at the bottom-left corner, and choose Upload.

  3. Select the location of the file you want to upload.

    Note: Local Files is the folder on your mobile device, containing files downloaded to your mobile device by DS file. The folder is empty if you haven’t downloaded any files with DS file.

  4. Tap the file to begin uploading. You can check the progress by tapping the Background Tasks button at the bottom. Tap the button at the top-left corner to return to the destination folder.

  5. When the process is complete, tap the Refresh button at the bottom to see the uploaded file.

To download a file to your mobile device with DS file:

  1. Tap the file and choose Download.

  2. You can check the progress by tapping the Background Tasks button at the bottom.

  3. Tap the Local Files button at the bottom to see the downloaded file.

  4. Note: Local Files is the folder on your mobile device, containing files downloaded to your mobile device by DS file. The folder is empty if you haven’t downloaded any files with DS file.

To copy, move, rename or delete files with DS file:

  1. Browse to a list of files and tap Edit at the top-right corner.

  2. Tick the checkboxes to select the files you want to edit.
  3. Tap any of the buttons at the bottom and follow onscreen instructions to move, copy, rename, or delete files stored on your DiskStation. The buttons include (from left to right): Move, Copy, Rename (only available when you select a single file), Delete
  4. Tap Done at the top-right corner to finish the operation.

To preview a file with DS file:

  • Tap the file and choose Open.

Note: DS file supports the following file formats: .doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, .xls, .xlsx, .txt, .pdf, .jpg, .png, .gif, .bmp, .mp3, .m4a, .mp4, .m4v and .mov
