How do I adjust the frame rate and bitrate to optimize the playback quality?

Details

Depending on the stream settings and differences among devices, Surveillance Station may sometimes provide limited image quality. Try adjusting the frame rate and bitrate control settings for a better viewing experience.

Resolution

Adjust the frame rate (FPS)

Frames per second (FPS) can be used to measure the fluency of videos as it indicates how many complete images are displayed on-screen each second. High FPS values usually deliver smoother playbacks.
If you find the Live View quality unsatisfactory, go to IP Camera > Edit > Device > Video > Frame rate (FPS) and select a higher value.1

Adjust bitrate control settings

Bitrate indicates the number of bits that are conveyed each second and therefore determines the size and quality of video files.
From IP Camera > Edit > Device > Video > Bitrate control, you can choose between two options:

  • Constant: Constant Bitrate (CBR) conveys the same number of bits each second and delivers stable images and fixed-size video files. If your main issue is that images often blur or are incomplete, select this option.
  • Variable: Variable Bitrate (VBR) conveys different numbers of bits according to the complexity of the video. Higher bitrates are applied when the video frames are more complex. Lower bitrates are applied when the frames are relatively simple. If you wish to improve the overall Live View viewing experience, select this option.2

Notes:

  1. System performance may be affected when multiple cameras use high frame rates. To check the specifications of your Synology server, please visit our official website, go to the Products tab to find your model, and refer to the Specs > Software Specifications section.
  2. If you select Variable, the system will not be able to calculate video file sizes precisely. Make sure to reserve sufficient storage space.
