  • PC Plus Magazine, United Kingdom
    2007/12
Synology Disk Station DS207+ received the Hotlist Award and the Performance Award from PC Plus Magazine, U.K.

"Synology's openness through its user forums has become a catalyst for user modification; the most successful of which is the Slim Server on Disk Station, or SSODS. This is an implementation of Logitech's (formerly Slim Devices') Squeezebox media streamer…It's a breath of fresh air to hear a company actually advocating the modification of its products."

"While Synology may soon face harsh competition from Windows Home Server, it's difficult to imagine Microsoft supplying anything like the same user interaction, and – given Microsoft's history – equally hard to imagine being treated to new ways to share and manage our stored data without paying for a major update. It's for this reason that the Disk Station is likely to remain the firm favourite for anyone interested in expanding and customizing on their network-attached storage devices."

  • SmallNetBuilder.com, United States
    2007/09

"I prefer Synology's approach to that of Buffalo, which forces you to choose between its "Live" products that include media servers, and its "Pro" models that offer "corporate" type features, i.e. ADS/NT4 support, without media servers.…. While Synology also offers "business" and "consumer" focused models, the business versions provide features in addition to all those found on its consumer models."

"For a simple home network, the DS107e would be ideal. For a network using ADS, either the DS107 or DS107+ would be appropriate. From a price/performance perspective, it appears that the DS107 is the sweet spot. However, for the best performance, the DS107+ is the clear choice."

A local area network is needed, and the speed appears to be slower than that of a USB hard disk. The DS207 does not bring a miracle solution, but its well-thought design makes it possible to add it in a local area network simply and its catch gigabit ensures the high transmission speed."

    CONCLUSIONS AND AFTERTHOUGHTS

"As a reviewer, it's always a pleasure to work with a product that performs as advertised. While a lot of products that we get here at Tweaknews meet expectations, it's a rare instance that we find one that exceeds expectations. The Synology Disk Station DS107e is just such a product. I was very impressed with what the DS107e was capable of. I was astounded at how easily Synology allowed me, a relative neophyte in this arena, to make all the features work. You won't be left in the dark after your Synology purchase, either. They seem to have an excellent support system, as I found while perusing their forum (you can see for yourself HERE.) In fact, I found that there were some software updates available for the DS107e while reading through the appropriate section. It's this kind of customer support that, in conjunction with the excellent features and performance of this product, allow me to recommend the DS107e to anyone."

    Sharing with added value

"The key point for most users of Data storage devices is capacity. DS207 can be used with two 750GB disks and 1TB capacity is not excluded. This offers really huge capacity."

"SATA disks can be used in RAID 1 for safety or RAID 0 for a speed."

"Data transfer speed is also a very important factor. Synology DS207 can be attached to Gigabit Ethernet. As we measured the speed - the real speed in standard conditions was 12.5MB/s, at 100Mb/s Ethernet was a speed 10MB/s."

"Tested NAS is offering a lot of functions. Beside of data sharing enrich your network with Multimedia UPnP server, iTunes server, web server with PHP and MySQL, printer sharing, download from internet, digital photo publishing... Number of functions is really impressive, very interesting is the possibility of downloading data from FTP incl. BT without having computer on. Also web server or Internet photo gallery are not typical functions for NAS, so DS207 can completely replace a smaller server in many cases."

"We appreciated transparent web based management with wide range of functionality settings and added applications for data backup and download functions. Synology is also taking care about security - web interface, FTP and backup can be easily encrypted."

And from there on, the rest of the management tasks are through the Web-based UI. Besides all the typical network storage features, the DS207 is also capable of providing ftp, web, and iTunes services. The latter is a service that allows iTunes clients in the same network subnet to browse and play music stored in the shared folder of the drive."

"In the event of power loss, the DS207 has the option to self recover upon restoration of power; also in order to reduce wear and tear as well as power consumption, there is an option for hibernation during idle. Performance wise, it's strongly advisable to connect the device to a gigabit network in order to extract its maximum throughput performance. To prove our point, we transferred a folder that has 47 files and 538MB in size over the conventional 100Mbps network as well as a gigabit LAN. The former took us about 1m 21sec, while the latter required only 47 seconds. We will let you do the math here."

"To sum it up, we really enjoyed the functionalities and performance the DS207 and we would recommend the DS207 without hesitation."

    2007/06
Synology Disk Station DS107+ received the Gold award (Product of the Year) from HARDWARE-TEST.COM, Denmark.

"Synology have updated their Disk Station network storage servers, and have come up with a magnificent product for those in need of a small file/web/ftp server. I am more than ready to scrap my old PIII setup in favor of DS-107+. It contains all the functions I have running on my current server plus a few more, takes up one tenth of the space and uses less than half the power."

"I think it is absolutely brilliant to be able to contain all your networking needs in one small unit that will continue to work when your PC is off. I especially like the One-Click USB-Copy function that will backup your USB key directly from the front panel."

"The software included works very well, but first-time users may need to do some reading on how to specify rights in folders in order to learn the advantages. I had no problems during installation of software and operating firmware. There is an excellent HELP function in the web-manager, and several submenus have their own built-in tutorial witch makes it easy to get to know the individual functions."

Finansavisen, the Norwegian Financial Daily in Norway, reported Synology Disk Station DS207 - Dual usage from Synology

    Dual usage from Synology

Digital cameras, digital video cameras and Mp3's drives demand for storage capacity. Synology has launched a new storage solution with room for two discs.

For most consumers it might seem too technically challenging to buy a storage solution that is connected to the home network (NAS). However, many have bought a wireless network router, and from there hooking up a NAS is easy. The data stored on these types of units are available to all PCs connected to the network. In addition, the unit can also be used for backup of important files. The solution can be administered through a web browser such as Internet Explorer.

    Advanced

Synology has provided the marketplace with solutions that might have more in common with a server than a NAS, but without the solutions becoming too complex. It is possible to only make use of the basic functionality in Disk Station DS207 and make use of the more advanced features when they are needed.

When we speak of advanced functionality, access to data from remote locations is one such function. All that is required is a PC and a web browser.

When on vacation in the USA with a digital camera filled to the rim with images, the images can be sent home to Norway from any Internet café. There is an FTP server built into the Disk Station. Friends and family can also upload or download files the storage unit.

Other functionality includes a multi-media server (UPnP AV). Any media player, as for example a PC, a DMA or a Kiss DVD player will automatically discover digital content on the storage unit. iTunes support is also included.

Backup solutions, web server, photo server (Photo Station) are amongst the other included technologies.

    So what's new?

Disk Station DS207 has two available slots for SATA discs. The company claims to support disks with a maximum capacity of 750 GB, but test reveal that also larger discs are supported.

In addition there are three USB ports where additional discs can be connected to increase the total capacity further. Two discs make RAID possible. In short, RAID can increase performance or security.

Synology has also improved the download function. Download manager is a function that lets the Disk Station handle downloads from the BT network, FTP-servers or web. For people that are fed up with having the PC turned on at all hours of the day, this function is very useful.

In the latest version, the function can be used and administered from a remote location through a browser. Previously, only local use worked. A PC client is no longer needed. All administration is done through a web interface.

Synology DS207 Network Attached Storage Device

"The Synology DS207 is currently one of the most feature rich NAS products available on the market. It incorporates mediocre performance, 2 Bay drive support with RAID 0/1, and an array of multimedia and network functionality. With an extremely small footprint you'll be amazed at the capabilities of the DS207."

    Two clever boxes from Synology

"Have you solved data sharing at your company or on the home network? Do you want to run your own website? Do you need to share the printer? The answer for all of these questions can be Synology DiskStation DS107e."

"Installation and management of Disk Station is really very easy. We tried to define users and groups, then Windows utility on client PC mapped shared folders into Windows. We have no simple problem even in the Novell network in our lab. We also tested external disk sharing."

"Synology is also offering two-SATA-disk version DS207, mainly for companies or users, who need higher security. This model supports RAID 0/1 and ..."

    Conclusion

Having deep knowledge about NAS solution, we can strongly recommend both models DS107e and DS207. Even the advanced users can easily set up the server and you can forget the NAS after initial settings and keep your mind in peace. The NAS will then satisfy all requirements without your supervision.

PC Disguised as an NAS Synology Disk Station DS207

"All in all, we absolutely adored Synology Disk Station for demostrating what the next generation of NAS devices should look like. And with an attractive price tag, we don't think even an low-end PC (with a free Linux OS) could match its value and the convenience it offers."

  • MaxIT Magazine, Malaysia
    2007/05
Synology Disk Station DS207 scored 5 out of 5 from MaxIT Magazine, Malaysia.

"As a storage solution, the DS207 provides a lot of control and management. You can partition your storage and allocate quotas on a per-user basis over Windows and AppleTalk. But beyond that, the DS207 also serves up media streams to Digital Media Adapters, FTP and Apache Web server onto the Internet, In other words, the DS207 is a NAS, file-server, media server and web-server all rolled into one."

"But wait, there's more! The DS207 also has a web-based photo gallery and BT client/download manager. The photo gallery displays your photo galleries via an interface that looks very much like Flickr. The download manager, on the other hand, is a service that lets users queue downloads to the DS207. This can either be simple HTTP/FTP downloads or BT files. Once queued, the DS207 will download the files to an assigned folder on its own. The administrator can schedule these downloads so as not to interfere with working-hours, for example."

Synology Cube Station CS407e received the "Must Have" award from Legion Hardware.com, Australia.

"The Synology Cube Station CS407e is a seriously good quality product and we highly recommend it to anyone looking at a four drive NAS solution for the home or small office."

"Already we have become very attached to our Cube Station CS407e sample and have found it to be an invaluable tool for storing and accessing data. The CS407e is powerful enough that several users can access it at once, streaming music, movies and pictures. There are few NAS devices that are as flawless as this one, so we guess you can't really put a price on quality. Amazingly the CS407e also leaves a very small footprint and as we have mentioned, looks very attractive."

"The performance of the Cube Station CS407e was excellent when compared to other NAS devices we have tested. Although the performance was not comparable to that of our test system it was more than enough to share documents, pictures and stream audio and video. Overall the Synology Cube Station CS407e is a fantastic product that should certainly be considered by anyone looking at serious network storage. We have really enjoyed testing this product and will continue to use it for file sharing and system backup purposes."

Synology Disk Station DS-106 received Editor's Choice award from Overclockers Club.com, Canada.

No matter what angle I look at this DS-106 from, I am always left with the same feeling of satisfaction. In my opinion, Synology has taken about 90% of the hassle out of tasks that previously were difficult or cumbersome to setup. The ability to host a website with a few simple clicks, to setup a FTP server, or to even share files with friends is brought to you in one simple, yet elegant package... and that package is the DS-106 from Synology. Throughout every test that I performed, the features of the DS-106 performed outstandingly. Since I didn't experience a single hiccup, the simple fact of the matter is that if you are looking for a backup, file/web hosting, or just network storage solution, the DS-106 fits ALL of those requirements. This is the first product that we have had the chance to review from Synology and this unit is the "icing on the cake" of their product line. The Synology DS-106, with its overall outstanding performance in backup solutions and network storage, has definitely earned a place in my books.
