How to install Synology Storage Console in your VMware environment
Purpose
Synology Storage Console for VMware offers you a simpler way to monitor and manage your Synology NAS on vSphere Client. After installing Storage Console, you can also take application-consistent snapshots. This tutorial will guide you through the installation of Storage Console.
Environment
- VMware:
- vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 U2 to 6.7
- vSphere Client (HTML5) only
- Synology: DSM 6.2.3 or above
Resolution
- Enter the IP address or URL of vSphere Client in the address bar of your browser. Click vSphere Client (HTML5) - partial functionality.
- Log in to VMware vSphere Client and click Hosts and Clusters to go to the host management page.
- Right-click on any of the hosts and select Deploy OVF Template.
- Follow the onscreen instructions in the wizard to import the Storage Console virtual machine. Make sure you select a datastore with more than 16 GB of available space as the storage.
- Choose the OVA file for Synology Storage Console for VMware.
- Configure the following items at step Customize template:
- The networking properties of the Storage Console virtual machine. Configure a static IP address to prevent connection failures between the vCenter Server and Storage Console server caused by IP address changes.
- The IP address, username, and password of VMware vCenter Server. The settings can be modified later in the virtual machine console of Storage Console on vSphere Client.
- Wait for the virtual machine to be deployed after completing the wizard.
- The networking properties of the Storage Console virtual machine. Configure a static IP address to prevent connection failures between the vCenter Server and Storage Console server caused by IP address changes.
- Choose the OVA file for Synology Storage Console for VMware.
- Right-click on the virtual machine and select Power > Power On.
- After the virtual machine is powered on, log out from vSphere Client and log in again to activate the plugin. Different versions of vSphere Client may ask you to re-login or refresh the page.
- Click Menu > Synology Storage Console to enter Dashboard.
Notes:
- The language of vSphere Client can only be changed using the method mentioned in this article from VMware Knowledge Base.
- To start using Storage Console, you must add a storage system.
- If Synology Storage Console is not installed successfully, the possible reasons are as follows. To identify the issue, go to Storage Console virtual machine's console, whose default username and password is root and synology.
- Connection issues between VMware vCenter Server and the Storage Console virtual machine
- Wrong vCenter Server information entered at step Customize template
