Can I create a volume larger than the maximum single volume size?

No, you cannot. It is not possible to create a volume larger than the maximum single volume size, nor can an existing volume be expanded beyond this size limit. However, you can create more volumes in your storage pool if there is unallocated capacity available.

1. Check whether your storage pool supports multiple volumes

  • DSM 7 and above: All newly created storage pools come with multiple-volume support.
  • DSM 6.2 and below:
    1. Go to Storage Manager > Storage Pool and click on a storage pool to view its details.
    2. Check the Multiple volume support field:
      • If Yes is displayed, the storage pool supports multiple volumes.
      • If No is displayed, the storage pool only supports a single volume, and no more volumes can be created.

2. Create additional volumes

For detailed steps, refer to the respective help articles for DSM 7 and DSM 6.2.

Will migrating my drives change the maximum single volume size limit?

Whether the maximum single volume size changes depends on the destination Synology NAS model.

  • To a model with a smaller size limit:
    • Existing volumes: The size limit will remain unchanged, as this size limit is determined at the time of volume creation.
    • New volumes: The size limit will follow the size limit of the destination NAS.
  • To a model with a larger size limit:
Both existing and new volumes will follow the size limit of the destination NAS, except for 16 TB models, where only new volumes adopt the larger limit.

Notes:

  1. Certain models may not be available in your location. Please contact your local distributors for more information.
  2. For some models in this category, you can create a volume larger than 108 TB and up to 200 TB if the following requirements are met:
    • System memory: At least 32 GB
    • DSM version: DSM 7.1.1 Update 5 or above
  3. For some models in this category, a system memory upgrade to at least 32 GB is required to create a volume larger than 108 TB and up to 200 TB.
  4. The RS2423RP+ and RS2423+ require DSM 7.1.1 Update 5 or above.
