Set up system notifications
There are two methods to send system notifications via Gmail. We recommend using Method 1 if possible as it is easier to configure.
In the following scenarios, please use Method 2:
- Send emails using ssmtp binary (e.g., running user-defined scripts in Task Scheduler).
- Send emails using PHP for websites built in Web Station (incl. emails from third-party software, such as WordPress, MantisBT, etc.).
- Send notifications when someone leaves a comment on a photo or an article in Photo Station.
Method 1: Use Gmail as your service provider (recommended)
If your Synology NAS has not been updated to DSM 6.2.4 or above, please do so before proceeding with the following steps. If your NAS can no longer be updated, please refer to Method 2 instead.
- Go to DSM > Control Panel > Notification > Email.
- Tick the checkbox of Enable email notifications.
- Fill in the Recipient's email address and Subject prefix.
- Set the Service provider to Gmail.
- Click Sign In (for DSM 7) or Log in to Gmail (for DSM 6.2).
- In the pop-up window, enter or select your Google account. Allow Synology DSM Notification to send emails on your behalf and click Agree.
- Return to the Control Panel. Click Apply to save the settings.
- Click Send a test email to see if the settings are correct.
Method 2: Set custom SMTP server to Gmail
Make sure you have enabled 2-Step Verification and App Passwords for your Google account1 before proceeding with the following steps:
- Go to DSM > Control Panel > Notification > Email.
- Tick the checkbox of Enable email notifications.
- Fill in the Recipient's email address and Subject prefix.
- Set the Service provider to Custom SMTP server.
- Fill out the required fields according to the instructions below:
- SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
- SMTP port: 587
- Authentication required: Tick the checkbox.
- Username: Enter your Gmail address.
- Password: Enter your 16-character App Password configured in your Google account.
- Security connection (SSL/TLS) is required: Tick the checkbox.
- Sender name: Enter a name as you like. This will appear on DSM email notifications.
- Sender email: Enter your Gmail address. Note that if the Sender email differs from the Username above, your emails may be marked as spam.
- Save the settings and wait for DSM to connect to your Google account.
- Click Send a test email to see if the settings are correct.
Set up personal notifications
There are two methods to send personal notifications via Gmail. We recommend using Method 1 if possible as it is easier to configure.
Method 1: Use Google as your service provider (recommended)
If your Synology NAS has not been updated to DSM 6.2.4 or above, please do so before proceeding with the following steps. If your NAS can no longer be updated, please refer to Method 2 instead.
- Sign in DSM and click the head icon on the upper-right.
- Go to Personal > Email Delivery (for DSM 7) or Email Account (for DSM 6.2). Click Add.
- Select Google as your service provider.
- Fill in your Sender name.
- Click on Authenticate.
- In the pop-up window, enter or select your Google account. Allow Synology Personal Notification to send emails on your behalf and click Agree.
- Click Apply to save the settings.
Method 2: Set custom service provider to Gmail
Make sure you have enabled 2-Step Verification and App Passwords for your Google account1 before proceeding with the following steps:
- Sign in DSM and click the head icon on the upper-right.
- Go to Personal or Options > Email Account and click Add.
- Select Customize as your service provider.
- Fill out the required fields according to the instructions below:
- SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
- SMTP port: 587
- Authentication required: Tick the checkbox.
- Username: Enter your Gmail address.
- Password: Enter your 16-character App Password configured in your Google account.
- Security connection (SSL/TLS) is required: Tick the checkbox.
- Sender email: Enter your Gmail address. Note that if the Sender email differs from the Username above, your emails may be marked as spam.
- Sender name: Enter a name as you like. This will appear on DSM email notifications.
- Use this email account as the default: Tick the checkbox.
- Click Test Connection to see if the settings are correct.
- Save the settings.
Notes:
- Google's security policy: Starting May 30, 2022, Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password. To bypass this limitation, enable 2-Step Verification and App Password.
