Create a User
You can create and manage multiple user accounts on your Synology NAS.
To create a user:
- Go to Control Panel > User & Group > User.
- Click the Create button to launch the User Creation Wizard.
- On the Enter user information page, specify the following options:
- Name: Enter a name for the user. This section is required.
- Description: Enter a brief description for the user.
- Email: Enter an email address for the user. System notifications, such as password reset messages, are sent to the address specified here.
- Password: Enter a password for the user, or click Generate Random Password to automatically create a strong password.
- Send a notification mail to the newly created user: If this option is ticked, the system will send a message to the user regarding the new account. This option requires enabling system email notifications at Control Panel > Notification > E-mail. By default the user's password is not displayed in the notification message. However, if you wish to display the password in the notification message, please check the Display user password in notification mail box.
- Disallow the user to change account password: If this option is ticked, the user will not be able to change his password used to sign in to DSM.
- Password is always valid if the password expiration is enabled / Password is always valid: Either of these options will be displayed depending on whether the administrator enabled Password Expiration in the Advanced tab. If Password Expiration has been enabled, Password is always valid will be displayed. Tick this option so this user's password will always be valid and will ignore the rules set in Password Expiration. Please refer to this page for more information.
- On the Join groups page, specify the groups to which the new user shall belong (e.g. users, administrators, etc.). You can also create a group manually and assign the user to the group.
- On the Assign shared folders permissions page, choose what shared folders the new user can access by modifying his access privileges. Privileges priority is as follows: No access > Read/Write > Read only.
- Preview: This column displays the user’s actual shared folder access privileges, according to current settings and groups to which the user belongs.
- Group permissions: This column displays shared folder access privileges assigned according to the user groups to which the user belongs.
- On the Assign user quota page, you can control how much storage can be used by the new user. To specify the maximum amount of space the user can use for each volume/shared folder, enter a value in the User Quota field and select the unit for size from the drop-down menu (e.g. 10 GB).
Note:
- The quota specified in User Quota has priority over group quota.
- Only when the volume is using Btrfs file system, you can specify user quota for each shared folders in the volume. Otherwise, you can only configure user quota for entire ext4 volume.
- On the Assign application permissions page, you can control which services the user can access. The Deny permission has priority over Allow permission.
- On the Set user speed limit page, you can enable a speed limit for different services (e.g. File Station, FTP, etc) to restrict the amount of bandwidth consumed by the user when transferring files. For each service, you can select one of the following:
- Apply group settings: The speed limit settings will be the same as the group to which the user belongs. The group with larger speed limit has priority over other ones.
- Set up speed cap: You can specify the upload and download speed limits in the fields to the right.
- Advanced settings: Two customized speed limits and group limit can be specified and applied to the user according to a schedule. Modify the speed limit settings and the schedule in the pop-up window. Click Save to save the settings.
- On the Confirm settings page, check and confirm the desired settings for the new user and click Apply to finish.
