How do I check my Synology MailPlus on Mozilla Thunderbird or Microsoft Outlook?

Purpose

To use a third-party email client with Synology MailPlus Server, you must first enable POP3 or IMAP access. In this article, we will show you how to enable these protocols on MailPlus Server and configure connection settings on Mozilla Thunderbird and Microsoft Outlook.

Resolution

Enabling POP3 and IMAP

  1. Go to Synology MailPlus Server > Service > Protocol > IMAP/POP3.
  2. Select the following options to allow POP3 and IMAP connections with third-party email clients:
    • Enable POP3: Downloads emails from the server and saves them locally. Changes made to the locally stored emails will not be transferred to the source server.
    • Enable POP3 SSL/TLS: SSL and TLS help secure the POP3 connection and protect transmitted data.
    • Enable IMAP: Allows accessing emails from multiple email servers and detects changes in real time. All emails from clients and servers are synced with each other.
    • Enable IMAP SSL/TLS: SSL and TLS help secure the IMAP connection and protect transmitted data.
  3. Go to Control Panel > Security > Certificate to verify that your MailPlus Server has a valid trusted certificate. Make sure that the mail server address matches either the domain name or a Subject Alternative Name (SAN) in the certificate.

Configuring settings on Mozilla Thunderbird

  1. Launch Mozilla Thunderbird on your local device.
  2. Click Email to launch Set up an Existing Email Account window.

  5. If Thunderbird fails to find your email account, check whether or not the protocol, server hostname, port, SSL, and authentication match the settings on MailPlus Server. If you have any problem filling in the fields, contact your system administrator for details.

Notes:

  • If you experience connection issues with Outlook or Thunderbird, try the following methods to troubleshoot:
    • For latest versions of Outlook or Thunderbird: Ensure MailPlus Server has a trusted certificate that matches your server address.
    • For legacy versions of Outlook: Go to Control Panel > Security > Advanced. Set the TLS/SSL Profile Level to Intermediate Compatibility or Old Backward Compatibility, as older clients only support lower security levels. For better security, consider upgrading your email client.
