  • Due to the hardware capability, DSM 4.0 will be the last DSM upgrade available for all x08-series DiskStations.

New Feature Highlights

  1. Cloud Station beta (Available in Package Center)

    • Cloud Station is a free package which offers a file-syncing solution on multiple computers that lets you bring your docs and multimedia anywhere and backup them easily.
    • 32 historical file versions are available for each synced file which helps you backup your important files automatically.
    • Recycle bin stored the deleted files for later retrieve if necessary.
    • Privilege control allows the selected users to use Cloud Station to control your network bandwidth.
    • Cloud Station client is now available on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7, helping you to sync data between your computers and Synology DiskStation via the IP address or ezCloud ID.

  2. ezCloud Service:

    • ezCloud is a cloud service offering QuickConnect, DDNS, MyDS Center, and Push Notification to help you setup/access/manage Synology DiskStation easily.
    • QuickConnect offers ezCloud ID which allows you to connect your Synology DiskStation using Cloud Station client or DS file without setting up port forwarding rules on your router.
    • Customized ezCloud ID allows you to create your own ezCloud identity.
    • DDNS service is free and now provided by Synology offering you the flexibility to customize your own domain in the easiest way.
    • MyDS Center, a Synology membership service, is now up and running to serve the community at MyDS.Synology.com, you may check your Synology DiskStation status from anywhere via the heartbeat feature and receive the push notification in case of any unexpected shutdown.
    • Push Notification enables you to receive the important messages instantly from your Synology DiskStation via Windows Live Messenger, Skype, DS cam and DS finder for iPhone/iPad.
    • HTTPS connection from DS file is supported in QuickConnect service.
  3. Applications Modularization:
    Six previously built-in applications - Photo Station, Audio Station, Download Station, Media Server, iTunes Server, and Surveillance Station - are now modularized to be independent packages, and they can be installed or updated separately without interrupting services running on DSM.

  4. iSCSI LUN Backup:

    • Point-in-time backup technology is used to allow copy-on-write implementation. Space re-claim mechanism is added to take place for any 4GB zero-block to reduce the file size of total backup.
    • In addition to the local host, LUN can also be backed up to an attached external storage device, or onto another DiskStation via network.
    • Incremental backup is available after running the initial full backup.
  5. Desktop Widgets:
    Seven new widgets are now introduced onto DSM desktop – System Health, Resource Monitor, Scheduled Backup, Storage, Current Connections, System Logs and File Change Logs. You will get an overview of system status and monitor the activities of your Synology DiskStation right after the login.

  6. User Interface Enhancements with HTML 5 and CSS3 Transform:

    • Instant Preview allows you to take a quick peek of a running app on the task bar before you switch to it. (Internet Explorer is not supported)
    • Pilot View gives you one place to see and navigate every app running on your DSM with just one click. (Internet Explorer is not supported)
    • You can make groups of shortcuts on DSM 4.0 Desktop.
    • You can personalize the background of the login page in DSM 4.0.
  7. Application Portal:
    You can customize the alias or HTTP port for Audio Station, File Station, Surveillance Station or Download Station, meaning you may now skip the DSM login page for better privacy and offer an easier way to share these services with your friends.

  8. Antivirus Essential (Available in Package Center):

    • Antivirus Essential is a free and complete antivirus solution from Synology.
    • Scheduled virus scan is available to keep your DiskStation safe and secure in your network at all times.
    • Automatic virus definition update allows you to perform the virus scan always with the latest virus definition.
    • Scanning files on the remote folders are supported.
  9. File Station Enhancements:

    • The previous File Browser has now been integrated and renamed to File Station.
    • Windows ACL user interface is now integrated into DSM, so you can edit Windows ACL directly in File Station.
    • Sharable file links are now provided to allow DSM users to share files to others with these private file links, without creating DSM accounts for them.
    • Uploading or downloading multiple files and folders in a sequential order is now available. (Java running on the PC client is required)
    • Personal favorite is now added for quick access to your folders.
    • Instant cut, copy, and paste are now available to manage folders and files between your Synology DiskStation and local computer in File Station.
    • File or folder shortcut on DSM desktop is available by directly drag-and-drop from File Station.
    • The number for maximum files to upload is raised to 300.
  10. Surveillance Station 5 Enhancements:

    • Live View Analytics lets user track targets and record events intelligently in real time. Live View Analytics History also provides user the ability to view Live View statistics and playback incidents.
    • Evidence Integrity Authenticator tool enables users to verify the originality of Surveillance Station's recording or snapshot.
    • Fisheye camera is supported to view 360 degree panoramic view. Multiple regions or 180 degrees hemispheric images can be dewarpped from distorted fisheye image.
    • More than 1,000 IP cameras are supported and 200 new IP camera models are added from Samsung, Vivotek, ACTi, Trendnet, D-Link, and etc. Please refer to the here for the complete list.
    • In addition to e-mail and SMS, push notification supports DS cam, Windows Live Messenger, and Skype and can now be scheduled by individual camera or event type simultaneously.
    • Camera can now be added in batch from different models and brands, to help system integrators efficiently setup a multiple of cameras.
    • Surveillance Station is becoming fast and more responsive.
  11. Photo Station 5 Enhancements:

    • Uploading photos to Picasa Web Albums or Twitter is now supported with just a few clicks. You can upload multiple photos to Picasa Web Album at a time.
    • The new Detail Mode offers you an additional way to view the picture wall in the original aspect of photos along with their titles.
    • A new album, Blog Images, will be created when you share pictures on your blog. The photos shared on your blog will be copied to this public album.
    • Copying photos between albums is now supported for easy management.
  12. Download Station Enhancements:

    • Watched Folder allows you to save torrents or NZB files to the specified folder and download tasks will start automatically.
    • SFTP and FTPS are now supported (not available when downloading a directory).
  13. Media Indexing Service:

    • Media Server, Audio Station and iTunes Server can be configured to include additional indexed folders for media scanning.
    • All picture, audio and video collections can now be customized to be scanned in the 3 default multimedia folders. (music, video, and photo)
    • MPEG-4 video conversion is now supported for playback on mobile devices in Photo Station.
  14. VPN:
    VPN client is now available to allow you to securely access the resources shared within VPN server's local area network, over the Internet. VPN client supports both PPTP and OpenVPN protocol.

  15. Syslog:
    Syslog client is now added to report to your Syslog server, which centralizes logs in one place for easy management.
  16. VLAN support:

    • VLAN tagging is now supported on your DiskStation, which improves the manageability, and reduces hardware/administrative cost. Supporting VLAN also helps your DiskStation fit into your existing network infrastructure.
  17. Hotspot: (not available on all 08 series, DS109j, and DS209j)

    • Wireless access point is now supported by simply plugging a USB wireless dongle into your DiskStation. For the complete supported list, please see here.
  18. Connection Manager:
    A real-time connection list is now added to allow you to monitor who is accessing your data and kill the connections of unwanted users. It is supported in DSM, FTP, Samba, and AFP protocols, as well as shown as the widget on DSM desktop.

  19. Configuration Backup Enhancements:

    • Configuration backup is integrated with settings of Control Panel, providing easy migration and fast system recovery.
    • Scheduled system configuration backup is introduced to automatically backup the configurations on a weekly basis to reduce the side effects of the system rollback.
    • You can partially restore system configuration now.
  20. VMware vSphere 5.0 VAAI Support:
    Atomic Test & Set (ATS) supported to eliminate LUN-level locking based on SCSI reservations and improve data access performance.

  21. DHCP Server: (Available in Package Center)

    • DHCP Server supplies IP address to other computers over TCP/IP networks on multiple subnets. It can also be individually turned on/off for each network interface.
  22. SMART Test Scheduler:
    SMART test by schedule is now available to scan HDD for potential risks on a timely basis to prevent data crisis.

  23. Smart Remap:
    A new mechanism is in place to protect the degraded RAID from being crashed during the repairing process due to bad sectors.

  1. Directory Server: Directory Server is now available as a package without additional cost, providing an integrated account management service for DiskStations, Linux, and Mac clients.
  2. LDAP Client: LDAP client is now built in DSM to help IT personnel integrate LDAP users and groups without manually recreating user accounts all over again.
  3. Remote Folder: Remote Folder is now added to centralize many distributed CIFS file shares in your local network, that will help you navigate the network shares without having to know the physical server names or shared folders hosting the data.

  9. UPnP Router Support:
    • Automatic router discovery is now supported in EZ-Internet with UPnP-enabled routers, with just one-click to set up your router.

  10. DSM mobile:
    • DSM mobile, a dedicated Web-App for iOS and Android devices, is now introduced to provide easy DiskStation management from mobile devices.

    • Privilege profile function is now added to help IT personnel quickly assign or modify multiple users’ camera privileges.
    • Surveillance Station can now conduct motion detection with MPEG4 and H.264 as well, you no longer need a camera with the built-in motion detection feature.
    • Single camera stream is now supported to reduce required bandwidth by half, freeing resource to other network applications and reduce camera loading for improved system stability.
    • Cameras of all codec types (MJPEG/MPEG4/H.264) can now use the same default DSM port 5000, simplifying the setup process for remote monitoring.
  17. iPhone/iPad App:
    • DS photo+ is now enhanced with multiple photos upload feature and the support of password protected album. Video streaming is also supported on Apple TV via AirPlay.
    • DS audio is now enhanced with Internet radio feature.
    • DS cam is now enhanced with the ability to live view single camera in MPEG4 and H.264 codec.
  18. Android App:
    • A new Android app, DS finder, will soon available for free download. DS finder helps you to easily monitor the status of your DiskStation while you are on the go, you can even start up the DiskStation remotely.   4. iSCSI LUN Backup:

    • Point-in-time backup technology is used to allow copy-on-write implementation. Space re-claim mechanism is added to take place for any 4GB zero-block to reduce the file size of total backup.
    • In addition to the local host, LUN can also be backed up to an attached external storage device, or onto another DiskStation via network.
    • Incremental backup is available after running the initial full backup.
  5. Desktop Widgets:
    Seven new widgets are now introduced onto DSM desktop – System Health, Resource Monitor, Scheduled Backup, Storage, Current Connections, System Logs and File Change Logs. You will get an overview of system status and monitor the activities of your Synology DiskStation right after the login.

  1. New Volume Manager:

    • The Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) simplifies the RAID setup, allowing the DiskStation to maximize the available storage of varying disk capacities yet with data protection. Experienced administrators may still use a manual option of creating a storage volume.
    • RAID10, 3-way RAID 1 and 4-way RAID 1 volume types are supported.
    • Block-based iSCSI target is supported and providing faster performance of file transfer.
    • The Volume Manager User Interface has been updated with additional graphics and illustrations.
    • RAID 5 to RAID 6 migration is supported.
  2. EZ-Internet: The EZ-Internet Wizard is now available for guiding through the steps to establish access to DiskStation from the Internet, including firewall settings, PPPoE setup, DDNS registration, and router port forwarding configuration*. The "Router Configuration" feature is also available on the management UI under "Internet Connection" category, which accomplishes the port forwarding tasks on the router for you.   3. Shared Folder Encryption: AES 256-bit shared folder encryption is supported with the DiskStation. The encrypted shared folder cannot be accessed until it is mounted by entering the encryption key.
  4. Backup Enhancements:

    • In addition to the existing "shared folder" level backup, "sub folder" level backup is now supported.

  7. iPhone Support: A new iPhone app, DS cam, is available on Apple® App Store for free. DS cam allows users who own an iPhone/iPod touch to live view the IP cameras (in MJPEG format), take snapshots, and view recorded events on your Surveillance Station whenever network connection is available.

  6. Sub-folder Privileges Setting: With the elegant Linux-style privileges, authorized users are free to modify privileges of folders, sub-folders, and files with the help of File Station 2.
  7. Enhanced User Management: "User Home" feature automatically creates a home folder and personal website address for each user; this greatly minimizes admin's effort to assign shared folder for each user. The application privilege setting allows the admin to flexibly determine applications (FTP services, File Station, Audio Station, Download Station and Surveillance Station) each user can access. In addition, the admin is now able to set up share folders privileges for each user.
  8. Enhanced Audio Station: Upon proper applications privileges setting, non-admin users will be able to login Audio Station and enjoy the music in web streaming mode. Advanced privilege settings are available in Audio Station including allowing non-admin users to use USB mode and manage the playlists.
  9. Enhanced Photo Station 3: The search function helps visitors find the photo/album more easily.     2. MPEG-4 Support: Other than M-JPEG video format, MPEG-4 format streaming and video recording is also supported, which significantly reduces the storage capacity requirement.
    3. Megapixel Support: Depending on the IP cameras capability, megapixel video live-view and recording can be supported.
    4. Snapshot: Snapshot taking in live-view and event play back is available.
    5. Enhanced Management: Admin can go to Privilege page of Surveillance Station and grant other users the privileges of managing Surveillance Station, simply watch the live-view and events, or nothing at all. In addition, admin can now monitor the live-view on full screen, and manage the cameras by enabling/disabling cameras without deleting all the settings. Event recording can be stopped at anytime and played back immediately.
    6. Enhanced Performance: Depending on the IP cameras capability, admin can choose to implement the motion detection by camera rather than Surveillance Station, which further enhances the system performance.
    7. Additional 45 IP Cameras Support: 45 more IP camera models from Panasonic, Vivotek and LevelOne are added into the support list. Synology Surveillance Station now support up to almost 70 IP camera models in total from 7 renowned brands. Read the detailed camera list here.

Enhanced Local Backup: Enables multiple scheduled Local Backup tasks with the assistance of Local Backup wizard, the backup destination can be either the external HDD or the shared folders on the internal HDD. From now on, the external attached HDD (EXT3 or FAT format) can be used as storage and backup disk simultaneously.
  9. Enhanced FTP Server: The advanced privilege of "write-only" is supported. In addition, limiting the maximum connections from each individual IP provides better bandwidth management together with the bandwidth restriction option. UTF-8 filename support which better handles multilingual characters is also optional.
  10. New Download Station 2: Other than BT/FTP/HTTP download, new download channels eMule and NZB are now supported by the Download Station 2. In addition, partial files download from BT is also allowed. Download Station 2 is now separated from the management UI and stands on an individual webpage.
  11. Enhanced File Station: Admin can designate his/her own File Station with a different port as well as customize webpage banner, so that users will login the File Station independent from the NAS server management UI. The advanced privilege of "write-only" is also supported.
  12. Enhanced Audio Station: No USB speakers are required for playing music stored on the server anymore. The new streaming mode streams .mp3 audio files to the client PC(1) and delivers by built-in speakers. A built-in playlist "Random100" will randomly choose and play 100 songs each time it is selected.
  13. Enhanced Photo Station 3: Admin can now customize Photo Station 3 background and theme in his/her own fashion, and sort photos and albums according to personal preference in the Settings area. Language setting is also modifiable based on his/her choice. The media RSS feed is now supported. Moreover, users can now enjoy the Photo Station 3 with Cooliris (formerly known as PicLens) dazzling full screen 3-dimensional photo slideshow(2). FLV video files are now supported.
  14. Enhanced Windows ADS Compatibility: Better handles the Windows domains especially for those with a large number of domain users. Windows Server 2008 is also supported now.
  15. Enhanced Mac OS Usability: Synology NAS servers will be automatically found by Bonjour protocol, including Finder and Safari browser (Bookmarks > Bonjour).
  16. Enhanced iTunes Server: M4A and M4P file formats are correctly indexed on iTunes server with tags information. WAV and AIF files are now supported to be streamed, but metadata may not be indexed.
  17. Enhanced Hibernation: Improved hibernation mechanism is introduced particularly to solve the problem of Western Digital Green Power series HDDs' not sleeping while in hibernation.

Special Notes

  2. After firmware upgrade and reboot, the system will re-create all thumbnails (bigger in size than the previous ones) for all photos stored in "photo" shared folder. This process might take some time, depending on the amount of files.
