  • Not all of the features of DSM 3.1 are available to all models due to hardware limitation; please see below for more information. New Features

  1. Storage Manager

    • New and improved Storage Manager offers the flexibility of creating multiple volumes on single RAID, which can be a pooled space of one or multiple hard drives. Storage Manager allows you to manage your storage in a more flexible and efficient way across all available hard drives.
    • Create and expand the volume size at your wish as your application needs change without disruption.
    • Synology Hybrid RAID now offers two disks fault tolerance to ensure your data is always safe with your DiskStation.
    • iSNS support provides easy management and access for your iSCSI targets.
  2. Shared Folder Sync: Shared Folder Sync allows you easily sync the shared folders from one DiskStation to another. The sync can be triggered by the modification on the files, or you can schedule the sync task according to needs, and retain the mirror shared folders on the destination DiskStation.

  3. File Browser Enhancements:

    • You can now directly play the supported video via File Browser from any web browser as long as Internet connection is available.
    • You can now directly preview the supported photos via File Browser and set it as the desktop wallpaper at the same time.
    • You can now directly open and save the supported documents in Google doc.
    • You can now directly launch the Audio Station to play the music files in “music” share from the mouse right-click menu.
    • Advanced search is now available to offer you numerous options for making your searches more precise and getting more useful results.
    • The option to enable file indexing function is also available to increase the efficiency to return the search results.
  4. Multifunction Printer Support (available for Windows environment): Multifunction printer is now supported to allow the print/fax/scan functions on your multifunction printer to be shared among family members or colleagues over the same network.     • Back up the same share to multiple destinations is now supported to allow you to keep multiple copies of the same share at different locations.
    • Windows ACL is now supported to allow you to restore the data alone with its complex privilege settings.
    • The DiskStation at backup destination can now be accessed by authorized users, your branch offices may now back up their files to their corporate center by using the private user account.
  7. Auto DSM Update: Auto DSM update is newly added to automatically check the latest DSM version available for your DiskStation, and allows you always update to the latest operating system upon your approval.

  9. Mail Server: Mail server is now built inside the operating system, DiskStation Manager 3.1, providing POP3/IMAP and SMTP services, you may now manage your emails on your favorite email clients such as Microsoft Outlook or Mac’s Mail.

    • The brand new Mail Station 2 package provides you the web mail service which allows your email communication to be more intuitive, efficient, and useful.

    • The equalizer function is available with the USB mode in Audio Station. With just a few simple clicks, you can use the equalizer in Audio Station to customize your listening experience.
    • The personal playlist is now available to your family members and your friends who have access to your Audio Station. They can easily keep their favorite music playlist of their own on your Audio Station without sharing it to anyone else.
    • ID3 tag editor is now added to allow you to modify one or more songs’ information at the same time, such as artist, album name, or title of the song.

    • DiskStation is now open to host multiple Photo Stations. Your family members or closed friends may host their own Photo Station on your DiskStation and share it with their own group of friends.
    • Social network is now featured in Photo Station, you can easily share the link of your photo album onto your Facebook, Twitter, or Plurk.
    • Now you can manage your videos or photos directly in Photo Station. You can move or remove the photos/videos immediately in Photo Station user interface, and able to preview them right away.

    • A new iPhone app, DS file, is now available on Apple® App Store for free download. DS file allows you who own an iPhone/iPod touch to browse the files on your DiskStation via WebDAV, and download/upload files from/to your DiskStation. You can also manage – copy, move, rename or delete - your files while you are away from your office or home as long as the Internet connection is available, off-line browsing for your favorites is also supported in case of the unstable wireless connection.
  16. iPad App:

    • DS photo+ is now enhanced with HTTPS support and the new and improved user interface has utilized the large screen on iPad to provide a more intuitive hands-on experience.
    • DS audio is now enhanced with HTTPS support and the new and improved user interface has utilized the large screen on iPad to provide the 100% iPad user experience. It can now also stream music directly to Apple TV in the same local network.
    • DS cam's user interface has been completely redesigned for iPad. Information display is now more intuitive via menu style controls, for viewing while browsing at the same time. More advanced filtering modes are also available for locating the events more efficiently.

  1. New Volume Manager:

    • The Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) simplifies the RAID setup, allowing the DiskStation to maximize the available storage of varying disk capacities yet with data protection. Experienced administrators may still use a manual option of creating a storage volume.
    • RAID10, 3-way RAID 1 and 4-way RAID 1 volume types are supported.
    • Block-based iSCSI target is supported and providing faster performance of file transfer.
    • The Volume Manager User Interface has been updated with additional graphics and illustrations.
    • RAID 5 to RAID 6 migration is supported.
  2. EZ-Internet: The EZ-Internet Wizard is now available for guiding through the steps to establish access to DiskStation from the Internet, including firewall settings, PPPoE setup, DDNS registration, and router port forwarding configuration*. The "Router Configuration" feature is also available on the management UI under "Internet Connection" category, which accomplishes the port forwarding tasks on the router for you.   3. Shared Folder Encryption: AES 256-bit shared folder encryption is supported with the DiskStation. The encrypted shared folder cannot be accessed until it is mounted by entering the encryption key.
  4. Backup Enhancements:

    • In addition to the existing "shared folder" level backup, "sub folder" level backup is now supported.
    • NetBackup shared folder is supported to act as the backup source. This allows backing up the data sets from DiskStation A to DiskStation B, and from DiskStation B to DiskStation C, and so on.
    • Amazon S3 is now supported as a backup target.
    • The Backup Wizard now allows backing up Surveillance Station event recordings with all the settings, including notifications, privileges and licenses.

    • Local file browsing is supported (Java Runtime Environment is required) for easy browse and upload the local folders or files to DiskStation with drag-n-drop actions.
    • Multiple tasks are now supported. Upload tasks are performed in the background and with the upload queue listed at the bottom of the File Station.

    • Event export function is supported to allow archiving the recorded events to an external storage device or another shared folder. At a later time the events can be mounted back for review on Surveillance Station.
    • More advanced camera settings are supported, including direct live-view streaming from the IP cameras, different image resolutions and frame rates settings for recording and live view, along with pre- and post-recording time and more flexible recording schedule configuration.
    • The sync-event player is improved with better time accuracy.
    • Motion detection setting is improved with threshold testing utility.
  7. iPhone Support: A new iPhone app, DS cam, is available on Apple® App Store for free. DS cam allows users who own an iPhone/iPod touch to live view the IP cameras (in MJPEG format), take snapshots, and view recorded events on your Surveillance Station whenever network connection is available.

  8. Photo Station 4:

    • Browsing photos with a photo wall or an image flow view is now supported.
    • Adjusting photo thumbnail size with a sliding bar when browsing photos is now supported.
    • Uploading photos and creating sub-folders through Photo Station UI is supported (Flash 9 is required). Enhanced privilege control allows customizing which albums each user accounts can access or upload photos.
    • Virtual albums are now supported, including albums of recent photos or videos.
    • Google map function is integrated, allowing browsing the location where the photo is taken if the geo-information is available in the photo, or manually edit the Google map location.
    • Enhanced album access permission allows easily setting the public/private attribute of all albums.

    • Streaming music from other UPnP/DLNA media servers within LAN is supported.

    • You can now directly play the supported video via File Browser from any web browser as long as Internet connection is available.

    • ID3 tag editor is now added to allow you to modify one or more songs’ information at the same time, such as artist, album name, or title of the song.

  1. New Volume Manager:

    • The Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) simplifies the RAID setup, allowing the DiskStation to maximize the available storage of varying disk capacities yet with data protection. Experienced administrators may still use a manual option of creating a storage volume.
    • RAID10, 3-way RAID 1 and 4-way RAID 1 volume types are supported.
    • Block-based iSCSI target is supported and providing faster performance of file transfer.
    • The Volume Manager User Interface has been updated with additional graphics and illustrations.

  2. EZ-Internet: The EZ-Internet Wizard is now available for guiding through the steps to establish access to DiskStation from the Internet, including firewall settings, PPPoE setup, DDNS registration, and router port forwarding configuration*. The "Router Configuration" feature is also available on the management UI under "Internet Connection" category, which accomplishes the port forwarding tasks on the router for you.   3. Shared Folder Encryption: AES 256-bit shared folder encryption is supported with the DiskStation. The encrypted shared folder cannot be accessed until it is mounted by entering the encryption key.
  4. Backup Enhancements:

    • In addition to the existing "shared folder" level backup, "sub folder" level backup is now supported.
    • NetBackup shared folder is supported to act as the backup source. This allows backing up the data sets from DiskStation A to DiskStation B, and from DiskStation B to DiskStation C, and so on.
    • Amazon S3 is now supported as a backup target.
    • The Backup Wizard now allows backing up Surveillance Station event recordings with all the settings, including notifications, privileges and licenses.
  5. File Station 3:

    • Local file browsing is supported (Java Runtime Environment is required) for easy browse and upload the local folders or files to DiskStation with drag-n-drop actions.
    • Multiple tasks are now supported. Upload tasks are performed in the background and with the upload queue listed at the bottom of the File Station.
    • Files and folders on the DiskStation can be compressed directly from the File Station.

  6. Surveillance Station 4:

  7. iPhone Support: A new iPhone app, DS cam, is available on Apple® App Store for free. DS cam allows users who own an iPhone/iPod touch to live view the IP cameras (in MJPEG format), take snapshots, and view recorded events on your Surveillance Station whenever network connection is available.

  8. Photo Station 4:

    • Browsing photos with a photo wall or an image flow view is now supported.
    • Adjusting photo thumbnail size with a sliding bar when browsing photos is now supported.

    3. Megapixel Support: Depending on the IP cameras capability, megapixel video live-view and recording can be supported.
    4. Snapshot: Snapshot taking in live-view and event play back is available.
    5. Enhanced Management: Admin can go to Privilege page of Surveillance Station and grant other users the privileges of managing Surveillance Station, simply watch the live-view and events, or nothing at all. In addition, admin can now monitor the live-view on full screen, and manage the cameras by enabling/disabling cameras without deleting all the settings. Event recording can be stopped at anytime and played back immediately.
    6. Enhanced Performance: Depending on the IP cameras capability, admin can choose to implement the motion detection by camera rather than Surveillance Station, which further enhances the system performance.

Enhanced Local Backup: Enables multiple scheduled Local Backup tasks with the assistance of Local Backup wizard, the backup destination can be either the external HDD or the shared folders on the internal HDD.   9. Enhanced FTP Server: The advanced privilege of "write-only" is supported. In addition, limiting the maximum connections from each individual IP provides better bandwidth management together with the bandwidth restriction option. UTF-8 filename support which better handles multilingual characters is also optional.
  10. New Download Station 2: Other than BT/FTP/HTTP download, new download channels eMule and NZB are now supported by the Download Station 2. In addition, partial files download from BT is also allowed. Download Station 2 is now separated from the management UI and stands on an individual webpage.
  11. Enhanced File Station: Admin can designate his/her own File Station with a different port as well as customize webpage banner, so that users will login the File Station independent from the NAS server management UI. The advanced privilege of "write-only" is also supported.
  12. Enhanced Audio Station: No USB speakers are required for playing music stored on the server anymore. The new streaming mode streams .mp3 audio files to the client PC(1) and delivers by built-in speakers. A built-in playlist "Random100" will randomly choose and play 100 songs each time it is selected.
  13. Enhanced Photo Station 3: Admin can now customize Photo Station 3 background and theme in his/her own fashion, and sort photos and albums according to personal preference in the Settings area. Language setting is also modifiable based on his/her choice. The media RSS feed is now supported. Moreover, users can now enjoy the Photo Station 3 with Cooliris (formerly known as PicLens) dazzling full screen 3-dimensional photo slideshow(2). FLV video files are now supported.
