How do I use Gmail SMTP server to send emails for SRM?

Purpose

This article will guide you through how to use Gmail as the service provider to send email notifications in SRM.1

Resolution

There are two methods to send SRM notifications via Gmail. We recommend using Method 1 if possible as it is easier to configure.

Method 1: Use Gmail as your service provider (recommended)

If your Synology Router has not been updated to SRM 1.2.3-8017 or above, please do so before proceeding with the following steps. If your SRM can no longer be updated, please refer to Method 2 instead.

  1. Go to SRM > Control Panel > Notification > Email.
  2. Tick the checkbox of Enable email notifications.
  3. Fill in the Recipients and Subject prefix.
  4. Set the Service provider to Gmail.
  5. Click Sign in to Gmail.
  6. In the pop-up window, enter or select your Google account. Allow Synology DSM Notification to send emails on your behalf and click Agree.
  7. Return to the Control Panel. Click Apply to save the settings.
  8. Click Send a Test Email to see if the settings are correct.

Method 2: Set custom SMTP server to Gmail

Make sure you have enabled 2-Step Verification and App Passwords for your Google account2 before proceeding with the following steps:

  1. Go to SRM > Control Panel > Notification > Email.
  2. Tick the checkbox of Enable email notifications.
  3. Fill in the Recipients and Subject prefix.
  4. Set the Service provider to Custom SMTP server.
  5. Fill out the required fields according to the instructions below:
    • SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
    • SMTP port: 587
    • Authentication required: Tick the checkbox.
      • Username: Enter your Gmail address.
      • Password: Enter your 16-character app password configured in your Google account.
    • Secure connection (SSL/TLS) is required: Tick the checkbox.
    • Sender name: Enter a name as you like. This will appear on SRM email notifications.
    • Sender email: Enter your Gmail address. Note that if the Sender email differs from the Username above, your emails may be marked as spam.
  6. Save the settings and wait for SRM to connect to your Google account.
  7. Click Send a Test Email to see if the settings are correct.

Notes:

  1. SRM (Synology Router Manager) is the operating system of Synology Router.
  2. Google's security policy: Starting May 30, 2022, Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password. To bypass this limitation, enable 2-Step Verification and App Password.
