How do I set up the PostScript USB printer on Synology NAS with my Mac OS version?

Purpose

Once a PostScript USB printer is properly installed on your Synology NAS, you can set up the printer on your client Mac computer. This article will guide you through how to set up the PostScript USB printer on Synology NAS with different MAC OS versions.

Resolution

Please check the list of compatible USB printers. Please be reminded that Synology has stopped updating this compatibility list since September 2017.

For Mac OS 10.12.X

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click Printer & Scanners.
  3. Click + to add a new printer.
  4. Choose IP as printer type.
    • Enter the printer's host name or IP address.
    • Choose Line Printer Daemon - LPD for Protocol.
    • Enter "usbprinter" in the Queue Field. If you have trouble finding your Queue name, go to Control Panel > External Devices > Printer on your DSM.
  5. Select Generic PostScript Printer for Use.
  6. Click Add to finish.

For Mac OS 10.6.X

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click Printer & Fax.
  3. Click + to add a new printer.
  4. Choose IP.
    • Choose Line Printer Daemon - LPD for Protocol.
    • Enter the printer's IP address.
    • Enter "usbprinter" in the Queue Field.
    • Select Generic PostScript Printer for Print Using.
    • Click Add to finish.

AppleTalk is no longer supported by Mac OS 10.6.X. If you need to use an AppleTalk printer, read its documentation for a possible way to connect it to your Mac computer or local network. If there is no way to connect the printer, connect it to a Mac computer with Mac OS 10.5.X or earlier, and set it up to be shared.

For Mac OS 10.5.X

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click Printer & Fax.
  3. Click + to add a new printer.
  4. Choose a method.
    • Method 1: AppleTalk
      1. Select Generic PostScript Printer for Print Using.
      2. Click Add to finish.
    • Method 2: IP
      1. Choose Line Printer Daemon - LPD for Protocol.
      2. Enter the printer's IP address.
      3. Enter "usbprinter" in the Queue Field.
      4. Select Generic PostScript Printer for Print Using.
      5. Click Add to finish.

Notes:

  1. Synology NAS cannot recognize printers connected via USB hubs.
  2. The memory card function of the connected printer is not supported.
  3. Certain devices released as of 2022 no longer support the network/USB printer function. For details, refer to the technical specifications for External Devices.
