How to upgrade from Cloud Station to Synology Drive (Based on Synology Drive 2.0 and above)

How to upgrade from Cloud Station to Synology Drive (Based on Synology Drive 2.0 and above)

Purpose

This tutorial guides you through how to upgrade from Cloud Station to Synology Drive, as well as how to upgrade the desktop application.

Environment

  • Check the list of applicable models to make sure that your Synology NAS supports Synology Drive.
  • The upgrade will take some time to complete, depending on the performance of your Synology NAS and how much data needs to be indexed. We recommend that you reserve some time for the upgrade, during which the service will be unavailable.1
  • Both the Synology Drive Server package and the Synology Drive Client desktop application are not downgradable. After you install them, the original Cloud Station will be replaced, and you cannot re-install Cloud Station unless you uninstall Synology Drive.
  • Synology Drive 3.0 no longer supports Cloud Station applications (Cloud Station Server, Cloud Station Drive, Cloud Station Backup, Cloud Station ShareSync, or DS cloud).2
    • For Cloud Station Server, Cloud Station Drive, Cloud Station Backup, and Cloud Station ShareSync, you should upgrade to their counterparts in Synology Drive 3.0 to ensure compatibility.
    • For the mobile application, DS cloud, you should upgrade to Synology Drive version 2.2 or above to ensure compatibility.
  • Synology NAS models manufactured after July 2019 or devices running DSM 7.0 and above no longer support Cloud Station Server.

Resolution

Upgrading to Synology Drive Server

  1. Check the status of Cloud Station Server and Cloud Station ShareSync on DSM to make sure that the packages are healthy.
  2. In Cloud Station Server > Client List, check the status of any connected clients because they may be affected during the upgrade. We recommend notifying users of the system downtime before proceeding with the upgrade.
  3. In DSM, go to the Package Center and install Synology Drive Server. Or, go to the Synology Download Center > enter your NAS model > the Desktop Utilities tab to download and install the package.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Make sure to take note of the package replacement notes shown in the wizard.
  5. After the installation, you can find Synology Drive Admin ConsoleSynology Drive, and Synology Drive ShareSync on DSM. Synology Drive Admin Console allows you to configure settings and check the client list, where you can view connected clients after the upgrade. Synology Drive ShareSync allows you to create sync tasks between Synology Drive servers.
  6. Users will now be able to launch and use the features of Synology Drive.

Upgrading the desktop application

  1. Go to the Synology Download Center > enter your NAS model > the Desktop Utilities tab, and download and install the Synology Drive Client desktop application.
  2. During the installation, the wizard will notify you that Synology Drive Client will replace Cloud Station Backup and Cloud Station Drive after the installation, and will ask if you want to continue with the setup. Click Install to continue.
  3. Tick the Run Synology Drive Client checkbox to launch the application right away. Click Finish to complete the setup.
  4. You can find the Synology Drive Client icon in the notification area of your desktop.
  5. Double-click on the icon to launch the application, and you will see that any previously existing tasks have been migrated.
  6. Notes:

    1. The system may need to re-index the application database after the upgrade, during which system resources may be occupied. This could result in inaccurate file listings and search results.
    2. Synology Drive Server works with Cloud Station clients. However, we highly recommend upgrading to the desktop application as well to enjoy all of the features of Synology Drive.
