Application Component

Hyper Backup

Hyper Backup backs up folders, files, packages, system configurations, LUNs, and entire systems from Synology NAS, with multi-version restore, deduplication, encryption, compression, integrity checks, and multiple backup destinations.

Backup Sources and Destinations

  • Hyper Backup backs up entire systems, folders, files, LUNs, packages, and system configurations.
  • Supported backup destinations:

  • Multi-version backup tasks are stored in the Synology .hbk backup format.
  • Backup tasks can use file name and file extension blacklists to filter which files are backed up.

Requirements

  • Backup destinations must have at least 8 GB of available storage.

Limitations

  • WriteOnce folders and files lose WORM protection when backed up in folders.
  • Backup destination folders used for relinking cannot be renamed.
  • External devices such as USB flash drives cannot be backed up.
  • Only one task for the same backup source can run at a time; other tasks for the same source queue and run sequentially.
  • Backing up data and deleting versions for the same backup task cannot run at the same time.
  • Multiple-version backup files can be read only with Hyper Backup, Hyper Backup Explorer, and Hyper Backup Vault.
  • Each backup task can include only one LUN as the backup source.
  • LUNs can be backed up only to external disks formatted as ext4.
  • Encrypted shared folders cannot be used as backup destinations for LUN backup tasks.
  • Backup task names must be 1 to 32 Unicode characters and cannot contain any of the following characters: !, ", #, $, %, &, ', (, ), *, +, ,, /, :, ;, <, =, >, ?, @, [, ], \, ^, `, {, }, |, or ~.

Versioning, Deduplication, and Storage Efficiency

  • Folder and package backups use file-level deduplication and incremental backup.
  • Entire system backups use block-level deduplication and incremental backup.
  • Hyper Backup retains up to 65,535 backup versions.
  • Version rotation can automatically delete older or unnecessary versions according to a custom policy.
  • Version rotation removes earliest versions when the total version count exceeds the configured number.
  • Smart Recycle keeps the earliest version created each hour, day, and week.
  • Customized retention policies can include up to seven rules for retention duration and version interval.
  • Client-side backup data compression improves backup performance and storage usage.

Limitations

  • Version rotation is not supported in DSM 5.1 or earlier.
  • Applications backed up in DSM 5.1 or above cannot be restored in DSM 5.0 or earlier.

Security

  • Client-side data encryption and transfer encryption use AES-256 and ECC Curve25519 encryption.

Monitoring

  • Storage usage statistics can be monitored with an adjustable time scale.
  • Email alerts can report abnormal storage usage according to defined thresholds.
  • File manipulation logs record adding, modifying, and deleting actions.

Recovery

  • Data and index integrity checks detect data corruption in previous backup versions.
  • Uncompleted backup tasks can resume without retransferring already backed up data.
  • The DSM multi-version explorer can browse, download, and restore files or versions.
  • Entire system backups can restore encrypted volumes, specific folders, and individual files.

Limitations

  • Encrypted volumes and shared folders can be backed up only when unlocked.
  • Entire system backup is supported only on specific models. To check if your model supports this feature, refer to the Product Specifications in Download Center > your model > Documents tab

Entire System Backup

  • WriteOnce folders and files retain WORM protection when backing up or restoring the entire system.

Requirements

  • To restore an entire system, the destination model must be the same as or newer than the source NAS model (e.g., restore the backup of DS218+ to another DS218+ or DS220+).
  • To restore an entire system, the destination must have at least the same number of drives and available storage space as the source NAS.
  • To restore an entire system, the destination drive setup must match the source NAS drive type and inserted slot positions. For example, if the source NAS uses all SSDs, the restoration destination should also use all SSDs; if the source NAS has a mix of SSDs and HDDs, the destination must have the same combination and order.

Limitations

  • WriteOnce folders and files lose WORM protection when restoring specific folders or files from entire system backup data.
  • Entire system backup to Google Cloud Storage cannot be relinked if any source folder name contains null characters.

Hyper Backup Vault

Hyper Backup Vault turns a Synology NAS into a backup destination for remote Synology NAS devices and monitors backup task status.

Vault Monitoring and Logs

  • Hyper Backup Vault monitors elapsed time for backup tasks.
  • Hyper Backup Vault monitors backup destination storage usage, including used size and usage percentage per task.
  • Each backup version includes a summary of source size, increased size, modified shared folder data, and modified application data.
  • Detailed backup task logs can be exported to HTML or CSV for auditing.
  • The number of backup tasks can be configured to prevent excessive memory usage on the Synology NAS.

C2 Storage Explorer

C2 Backup Browsing

  • C2 Storage Explorer can access backed up Hyper Backup task data directly from C2 Storage.
  • C2 Storage Explorer can view the contents of a backup version.
  • C2 Storage Explorer can download individual files or folders from a backup version.

Limitations

  • A single folder can be downloaded up to 20 times per day.
  • File and folder download counts are tracked separately.
  • Restoring a Hybrid Share folder to a previous version unpins all files and folders previously pinned in DSM > File Station.
  • A restored Hybrid Share folder loses all previous versions if it is enabled as a Synology Drive Team Folder and Synology Drive Team Folder versioning is enabled.
  • On Linux, symbolic links are not displayed in C2 Storage Explorer.
  • On Linux, symbolic link information is not downloaded when downloading a folder.
  • C2 Storage Explorer does not display encrypted shared folders, Hybrid Share folders, LUNs, or shared folders within encrypted volumes from entire system backups.

Hyper Backup Explorer

Hyper Backup Explorer is a desktop application for browsing and downloading backup data stored locally, on Synology NAS, or in Synology C2 Storage.

Desktop Backup Access

  • Hyper Backup Explorer supports Windows 7, Windows 10, macOS X 10.13 and above, and Ubuntu 18.04 and above.
  • Hyper Backup Explorer browses multi-version backups in .hbk and .bkpi formats.
  • Hyper Backup Explorer searches backup data in a single folder layer with keyword, file type, size in KB, and date range filters.
  • Files can be downloaded from backups to the local computer.
  • Encrypted backup files protected with AES-256 and ECC Curve25519 can be retrieved.
  • Backup files stored in Synology C2 Storage can be retrieved.

Limitations

  • Backed up LUNs cannot be browsed or restored in Hyper Backup Explorer.
  • Windows backup destination and save location paths can be up to 32,767 characters.
  • macOS and Ubuntu backup destination and save location paths can be up to 4,095 characters.
  • Files cannot be downloaded when the path reaches the length limit.
  • Copying symbolic links to Windows computers is not supported.
