The Company
The Challenge
Transitioning to digital content, SBS needed to effectively archive and manage substantial amounts of data.
Each program production team at SBS had accumulated a vast amount of footage, reaching multiple petabytes over time. Their storage requirements suddenly surged when they undertook a project that required the repurposing of existing program content from traditional broadcasting for online digital video production.
In response to this urgent need for increased storage capacity, SBS began searching for a scalable data storage solution that could provide high availability, reliability, and cost-effective storage. While exploring various options, the SBS Media IT team considered expanding their existing SAN architecture, but found it to be cost-prohibitive. Eventually, they chose Synology for its exceptional performance, compatibility, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
The Solution
After evaluating options from various vendors in the market, SBS decided to implement Synology's HD6500 and (20) RS4021xs+ units, resulting in a substantial decrease in storage cost compared to their old SAN storage. SBS now utilizes their Synology devices not only for archival purposes but also as file servers, enabling their program production teams to efficiently access and collaborate on files. Impressed by the performance, SBS is currently expanding their Synology server fleet to accommodate future storage demands.
Data security and the threat of ransomware was of great concern to SBS. By leveraging Snapshot Replication, a subscription-free package integrated into Synology servers, they were able to take snapshots of their data every five minutes. These snapshots are saved on a second server, which can be failed over to within seconds. The versatile and flexible Synology backup system has also streamlined their backup process and significantly reduced data recovery time by more than half.
