Limits and Considerations

  • Resource limits:
  • Capacity limits:
    • Maximum concurrent LUN backup tasks: 1
    • Minimum LUN size: 1 GB
    • Minimum legacy advanced LUN size on ext4 volumes: 10 GB
  • Requirements and limitations:
    • CHAP authentication is not supported for iSCSI discovery.
    • LUN provisioning
      • Thick Provisioned LUNs do not support snapshots or space reclamation.
      • Instant snapshots and instant restore require Thin Provisioned LUNs on Btrfs volumes running DSM 6.2 or later.
      • LUN defragmentation requires Thin Provisioned LUNs on Btrfs volumes.
    • Snapshots and cloning
      • LUN snapshot and cloning features are available only on supported Synology models.
      • Converting a legacy advanced LUN deletes all existing LUN snapshots.
    • Only legacy advanced LUNs support three modes for space reclamation:
      • Prioritize I/O Consistency
      • Balanced
      • Prioritize Reclamation

Storage Management

Monitor and manage Synology storage systems directly from VMware vSphere Client.

  • Create LUNs and shared folders through the vSphere Client datastore wizard.
  • Mount datastores from Storage Console.
  • Add storage systems over HTTPS.
  • Take application-consistent snapshots of mounted storage space.
  • Optimize ESXi host settings to improve shared-folder and LUN performance, as well as host-to-NAS connection stability.
  • Add a storage policy with the help of VMware VASA Provider (VASA 4.0).

Synology Storage Console for Windows

Storage Monitoring

Limitations

  • Synology Storage Console for Windows and Synology Snapshot Manager for Windows cannot be installed on the same Windows Server.
  • Application-consistent snapshots are not supported for Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) in a Windows Failover Cluster.
