The Synology DS413j is an excellent option for a home NAS. It provides enough speed for streaming of HD video, and includes many useful features like a bit-torrent client, VPN and many of the software goodies of the more expensive end products running the DSM software. At £275 its a great budget buy.

The DSM 4.2 operating system is industry leading and we love that the base install offers simple, no fuss network storage but that we can then add loads of "apps" to enhance the product in ways which suit our use.
As our testing has shown, the RS812 is capable of handling sustained transfer rates over 100MB/s when reading data and over 50 MB/s when writing data. This will be more than adequate for serving basic files across an internal network. The metal chassis is built to last, and with dual LAN fallover / Link Aggregation Support built in it should prove reliable over many years.
Synology’s new DS213air is bound with the usual plethora of Synology class. It looks classy, has great build quality and performs very well. Those who are wanting a reliable network solution with the added bonus of WiFi functionality should look no further, we love the DS213air – so much so, it receives our gold and creative awards.

DS413 provides a little more performance than faster-clocked ARM processor NAS drives at around the same price, and power consumption was also usefully low to keep it a wisely economical choice. With its comprehensive and approachable software interface and satisfactory hardware performance, the Synology DS413 comes recommended.
If expansion is a key requirement for your network storage the RS10613xs+ won’t disappoint as it has the highest potential in its class. Performance is excellent and it has more features than you can shake a stick at. There’s more to come with the next release of DSM as well.

The Synology DS213 Air is a well-thought out NAS device. The addition of wireless features certainly allows the DS213 Air to operate in more environments as it can be used as a wireless hotspot, giving a wireless network even if the router isn’t wireless.
