Test Environment for Data IO and Throughput Benchmarks

  • NAS/IP SAN:
    • Operating system: DSM 7.3/DSM UC 3.1
    • RAID volume type: RAID 6 (12 bays and above), RAID 5 (4 bays to 8 bays), RAID 1 (2 bays), Basic (1 bay)
    • Drives (fully populated):
      • SATA models: Synology 4 TB SATA HDD/960 GB SATA SSD
      • SAS models: Synology 8 TB SAS HDD/Western Digital 400 GB SAS SSD
    • Network interface cards: Fully populated with the maximum supported amount of Synology 25GbE NICs (for HD6500/FS3420/RS6426xs+)/10GbE NICs (for other models).
    • Network configuration: Utilize all network ports for maximum bandwidth.
  • Client computer:
    • 10GbE environment: Intel Core i7-13700K 5.4GHz; 2 x 16 GB DDR5-5600; 1 TB M.2 NVMe SSD; Synology E10G18-T2 NIC
    • 25GbE environment: Intel Core i7-14700K 5.6GHz; 1 x 32 GB DDR5-5600; 1 TB M.2 NVMe SSD; Synology E25G30-F2 NIC
  • Benchmarks:
    • SMB sequential throughput tests: FIO v3.35, 100% read/write ratio and 1 MB block size, Windows Server 2022 Datacenter
    • iSCSI random IOPS tests: FIO v3.35, 100% read/write ratio and 4 KB block size, Thin LUN, Windows Server 2022 Datacenter
    • NFS random IOPS tests: FIO v3.35, 100% read/write ratio and 4 KB block size, Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS

Test Environment for Synology Applications

  • Synology Drive and Synology Office:
    • Models with expandable memory are tested with the maximum supported quantity installed.
    • Models with SSD support are tested with a single SSD volume.
  • Synology MailPlus:
    • Models with expandable memory are tested with the maximum supported quantity installed. Learn more about memory requirements.
    • Models with SSD support are tested with a single SSD volume.
    • Operating in high-availability mode will incur additional overhead.
    • Features enabled during evaluation: anti-spam, anti-virus, DNSBL, greylist, content scanning, and full-text search (English).
  • Surveillance Station:
    • Models are tested with fully populated drive bays using the default memory configuration under continuous recording.
    • FS Series models are tested using SSD drives.

  • Performance measurements are conducted using numerous client endpoints with optimized network settings and manual traffic distribution. Your product performance may vary depending on configuration and environmental factors.
  • Performance testing for Synology applications is conducted without additional applications running on the system. Running multiple applications concurrently may impact both overall system performance and the performance of individual applications.
