How do I connect to VPN Plus Server via Mac?

Purpose

This article demonstrates how to connect to your VPN Plus Server using a Mac by taking macOS 10.15.7 as an example. If you want to connect to the VPN Server on a Synology NAS, please refer to this article.

Resolution

Before you start

  1. Set up VPN Plus Server and the following services on a Synology Router depending on your needs:
  2. Ensure the Internet connectivity of the Synology Router. Set up port forwarding rules if needed (refer to this article).

Set up a Synology SSL VPN connection

  1. Go to SRM VPN Plus Server > Synology VPN > SSL VPN.
  2. Click the URL to access the VPN Plus web portal.
  3. Sign in with your SRM credentials.
  4. Click SSL VPN on the left panel.
  5. Click Download to install Synology SSL VPN Client to your local computer.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions in the wizard to finish the installation.
  7. When the SSL VPN client starts running, the web page will refresh automatically.
  8. Set up a PIN code of at least eight characters if it's the first time you sign in to the web portal on this computer. This mechanism avoids unauthorized login to a malicious VPN server.1
  9. Click Connect to connect via Synology SSL VPN.
  10. Now all your connections from the local computer will go through the Synology SSL VPN. To stop using this VPN service, click Disconnect on the VPN Plus web portal.

Set up a WebVPN connection

  1. Go to SRM VPN Plus Server > Synology VPN > WebVPN.
  2. Click the URL to access the VPN Plus web portal.
  3. Sign in with your SRM credentials.
  4. Click WebVPN on the left panel.
  5. Enter the URL of a website, and click Connect.
  6. Now you can access this website via WebVPN.

Set up an L2TP/IPSec VPN connection

  1. Go to Apple menu > System Preference > Network.
  2. Click the plus icon in the lower-left corner to create a new connection.
  3. Configure the following settings and click Create:
    • Interface: Select VPN from the drop-down menu.
    • VPN Type: Select L2TP over IPSec from the drop-down menu.
    • Service Name: Name your VPN connection.
  4. Enter the IP address of your Synology Router in the Server Address field and a valid SRM username in the Account Name field.
  5. Click Authentication Settings and enter the following information:
    • Password: Enter the password of your SRM account.
    • Shared Secret: Enter the IPSec pre-shared key configured at SRM VPN Plus Server > Standard VPN > L2TP.
  6. Click Connect to establish the VPN connection.

Set up an OpenVPN connection

  1. Go to SRM VPN Plus Server > Standard VPN > OpenVPN and click Export configuration. Extract the exported file. You should see a openvpn.ovpn and README.txt file.
  2. Download Tunnelblick, an OpenVPN client for macOS.
  3. Open the installation file of Tunnelblick.
  4. Enter your User Name and Password and click OK.
  5. Click I have configuration files.
  6. Open the exported file openvpn.ovpn with TextEdit and replace YOUR_SERVER_IP with the public IP address of your Synology Router. If you wish to send all traffic over VPN, remove # from #redirect-gateway def1. Save the file after editing.
  7. Drag and drop the edited openvpn.ovpn file on the icon of Tunnelblick in the menu bar.
  8. Choose whether or not you wish to install configuration for all users.
  9. Click the Tunnelblick icon and choose Connect VPNConfig.
  10. Enter your SRM's user credentials and click OK to establish a connection.
  11. Choose VPN Details to check the connection status. You can disconnect by clicking Disconnect.

Notes about the PIN code for Synology SSL VPN:

  1. This PIN code is created by a user. It's neither a Wi-Fi PIN code nor the one behind your Synology Router.
  2. Once you set up the PIN code, you need to enter the PIN code again when connecting to another SSL VPN server for the first time on the same computer.
  3. The PIN code cannot be changed once the VPN has been set up. If you forget your PIN code or wish to change it, you must uninstall Synology SSL VPN Client and install it again.
