The Challenge
Yonsei University Health System (YUHS) initially utilized a network of Windows-based file servers to facilitate data access among employees. As medical services, data ingestion, additional sites, and staff expanded, the amount of upkeep outpaced the team's ability to manage every server securely.
Things were only made worse as data requirements for each department grew, causing significant performance bottlenecks and impacting essential workflows.
The Solution
To handle increasing data demands, YUHS deployed two Synology HD6500 systems to handle their primary file storage needs. The two high-density systems can each provide up to 6 PB of raw data storage, offering ample room for future growth.
Combined with extensive built-in and upgradeable high-speed networking capabilities, the two HD6500 systems can efficiently support both current workloads and anticipated future growth.
To reduce the necessity of manual file uploads, YUHS leveraged Synology Drive to keep data on over 15,000 employee endpoint systems automatically synchronized. Through Synology Drive, file sharing was greatly simplified, removing data silos that existed at the department or individual computer level.
The unified file server approach enabled YUHS' IT department to configure fine-grained permission control based on department, role, and individual users, significantly reducing data breach possibilities and minimizing management overhead. Combined with detailed logging of each employee's and endpoint's actions, YUHS' IT team can respond quickly to incidents and requests should they arise.
Founded in 1885, Kwanghyewon was South Korea's first western medical institution. Over the years, the institution grew and was eventually renamed Severance Hospital. By 1957, Severance Hospital, by then a medical college, and Yonhee University were merged to form Yonsei University. Over the next few decades, the university continued to expand with additional hospitals and research facilities across South Korea. Today, Yonsei University Health System (YUHS) is a leading medical network renowned globally for its research and high-quality healthcare.
