  1. A thorough investigation has been done, and it is confirmed that DSM and its related packages are not impacted by the LogJam vulnerability because of the way Synology implements OpenSSL in our system.

Compatibility and Installation

  1. DSM 5.2 can only be installed on Synology products running DSM 5.0 or above. Before starting, please log in to DSM and go to DSM Update to install the latest DSM.
  2. Some features have specific hardware requirements and are only available on certain Synology NAS products.

Important Notes

  1. DSM 5.2 is the last supported major DSM version for all 10-series models.
  2. An issue of data consistency caused by SSD TRIM is not resolved yet; as a result, SSD TRIM is currently disabled in DSM 5.2.
  3. DSM 5.2 is the last DSM version to support Time Backup as an add-on application in Package Center. Time Backup features will be fully merged into the built-in Backup package in future releases. Existing Time Backup users will not be affected.
  4. Sharing via Facebook and Google+ will no longer be supported starting from DSM 5.2.

  1. Single Sign-On
    • You can register multiple DSM and access them using one set of credentials. After initial login, linked DSM accounts will automatically log in to avoid credential re-authentication.
  2. Windows File Sharing
    • Added SMB3 and end-to end data encryption support.
  3. Backup and Replication
    • Added support for file-level restoration with File Version Browser in multi-version backup tasks.
    • You can set up backup rotation to recycle old backup versions automatically in multi-version backup tasks.

  1. iSCSI LUN Snapshots
    • You can take iSCSI snapshots more frequently, up to every five minutes.

    • Added support for two new modes when creating a bond interface: Adaptive Load Balancing and Balance XOR.

    • Based on the OAuth2 standard, SSO Server package turns Synology NAS into a SSO server that allows developers to register their web applications to the server and utilize the single sign-on feature. This increases daily productivity by saving time spent on re-authentication.

Compatibility and Installation

  1. DSM 5.1 can only be installed on Synology products running DSM 5.0. Before starting, please log in to DSM and go to Control Panel > Update & Restore > DSM Update to install the latest DSM.
  2. Some features have specific hardware requirements and therefore are only available on certain Synology NAS products.
  3. Weather information in the DSM login page and CIFS Scale-Out Cluster will neither be available nor supported in DSM 5.1.

    • Security Advisor is a DSM security application that scans your DSM settings and Synology NAS and recommends changes that help keep your Synology NAS safe.
  2. AppArmor
    • Application Armor kernel security module is now enabled in DSM. Each system program is associated with a security profile that restricts certain functions, protecting against unknown threats from malicious software.
  3. Service by Interface
    • You can set the network interface that each service will use in Control Panel > Info Center > Service.
  4. App Privileges
    • You can assign application privileges for local and domain groups.
    • You can define application privileges according to IP address.
  5. DSM Auto Update
    • You can create a schedule to install DSM updates automatically to keep your Synology NAS up-to-date.
  6. Package Center
    • Trust level protects you from installing altered packages or packages from unknown sources on your Synology NAS.
  7. 2-step verification enforcement
    • 2-step verification can be enforced on admin groups or all users.
  8. Backup and Replication
    • You can now back up data from any Synology NAS (A) to a volume on another Synology NAS (B) using its non-admin account (on B) with network backup destination privileges.

    • You can configure the iSCSI LUN using advanced features to optimize the performance.
  12. VMware VAAI NAS
    • Added NFS support for two primitives: Full File Clone and Reserve Space.

Compatibility and Installation

  1. DSM 5.0 will be the last DSM upgrade for all 10-series Synology NAS due to hardware capabilities.
  2. All packages must be updated to be compatible with DSM 5.0.
  3. The following packages are not available nor compatible with DSM 5.0: Zarafa, DVBLink, and Polkast.
  4. DSM 5.0 can only be installed on Synology products running DSM 4.3 or later. Before starting, please log into DSM and go to DSM Update to install the latest DSM.

    • For shared folders created in DSM 4.3 or earlier, you can either convert the existing permissions to Windows ACL, or leave the permission unchanged.
    • The shared folders - photo, surveillance, and shares on external storage or volume with ext3 file system cannot use Windows ACL permissions.

DSM 4.3-3827 Update 2 can only be installed on Synology products running DSM 4.3-3827 via DSM Update. Please log in to DSM, go to Control Panel > DSM Update, click Update Settings and select Important Updates Only to see and install the update.

Compatibility and Installation

  1. DSM 4.3 can only be installed on Synology products running DSM 4.0 or later. Before starting, please log into DSM and go to Control Panel > DSM Update to install the latest available update.
  2. The following packages must be updated to be compatible with DSM 4.3: Photo Station, Audio Station, Video Station, and Media Server, AntiVirus by McAfee, Antivirus Essential.
  3. Some features have special hardware requirements and are only available on select models.

What's New

  1. Trust Domain Support in Active Directory
    • Users and groups belonging to trusted domains can be assigned privileges to access files or run applications after your DiskStation joins a Windows domain.
    • You can specify how often the DiskStation automatically updates the domain user/group list.
  2. Broader LDAP Client Support
    • Your DiskStation can now join an LDAP domain hosted by IBM Domino LDAP Server 8.5.
    • If you use a different LDAP server with different attributes for account names and group names, there are now options to specify or customize how user and group information is mapped to LDAP attributes.
  3. NFS
    • NFS v4 support has been added, including pseudo file system and a stateful protocol.
    • NFS v3 and v4 now support IPv6.
    • If Kerberos security flavor is implemented, you can map the NFS client to a local user, a domain user or a LDAP user.
    • Additional NFS settings have been added for NFS v3 and NFS v4, such as default read and write packet size, or allow clients to access NFS servers with insecure, non-privileged ports.
  4. Speed Limit Scheduler
    • Bandwidth speed limits can now be configured according to a schedule, so speed limits will take effect at specific times only.
    • Varying speed limits can be customized for each user and group, allowing you to implement different limits at different times.
  5. Task Scheduler
    • When creating tasks to automatically empty recycle bins, you can now define a retention policy to control what files are permanently deleted according to time, size, or file types.
  6. Self-service Password Recovery
    • System admins can allow DSM local users (and LDAP users on Synology Directory Server) to conveniently reset passwords via email.
  7. HFS+ Support
    • HFS+ External drives are supported in DSM 4.3.
    • Read only is supported and the maximum volume size is 2TB.
    • HFS+ journal is not supported.
  8. File Station
    • You can now create links to share folders with non-DSM users.
    • Users allowed to create sharing links can now be specified.
    • The size of thumbnails can be changed.
    • You can drag-n-drop files or folder to your desktop to download them easily. Supports Google Chrome browser only.
  9. Advance Options for Windows File Service (SMB)
    • The following advance options for Windows File Service (SMB) have been added: DirSort VFS module; Veto files (hide files according to specified criteria); symbolic links and wide links; MSDFS VFS module (allowing symbolic links to point to files or folders located on another server); save debug logs; and clear SMB cache files.
  10. Package Center
    • A default volume on which packages being installed can be specified, simplifying package installation.
  11. Disk Usage Report
    • You can easily remove duplicated files in the disk usage report.
  12. 3G/4G USB Dongle Support
    • A 3G/4G USB dongle can be plugged into your NAS, allowing it to connect to a mobile network. On DS213air or DiskStations with Wi-Fi dongle, you can share your 3G/4G Internet access with tablets and laptops wirelessly.

  13. Wi-Fi Hotspot Enhancements
    • Time-based Parental Control: Allows you to control when each client device connected to the DiskStation's local network can access the Internet. The feature are available on DS213air only.
    • UPnP Internet Gateway: Enable UPnP service to allow your DiskStation to become a UPnP Internet Gateway device, so that devices that are connected to the local network of the DiskStation can configure port forwarding settings with UPnP. For DS213air or other drives with USB Wi-Fi adapter plugged only.
    • PPPoE Relay: Allows devices that are connected to the DiskStation to connect to the Internet via PPPoE connection. For DS213air or other devices with USB Wi-Fi adapters only.
  14. DSM Update
    • You can change DSM update settings to always install the latest version of DSM and critical updates, or install critical updates only.
  15. File System Check (FSCK) utility has been added.
  16. Built-in VPN client now supports L2TP over IPSec connection.
  17. FTP
    • ASCII support: Allows the DiskStation to properly transfer ASCII formatted plain text files via FTP.
  18. Misc.
    • S3 Network Backup supports multipart data upload.
    • PHP has been upgraded to 5.3.27.
    • Additional Security options to enhance the system's protection against cross-site request forgery attacks.

    • You can create sharing file links, protecting them with a password and an expiration date, compressing and extracting files on your DiskStation, or adding folders you access most often to your “Favourites” list.
    • You have to upgrade your DiskStation to DSM 4.3 to run this app.
  10. DS video for ROKU
    • DS video lets you access Video Station on your Synology NAS server, to watch videos, record digital TV programs, or simply stream them live. Categorize your videos with either default or custom libraries and create your own video collection lists for quick access.
