I set up my Synology Router but have connection problems. What can I do?
Symptoms
After setting up your Synology Router, its Internet connectivity is limited or unavailable.
Environment
- You are able to sign in to Synology Router Manager (SRM) via router.synology.com from your desktop browser. If you can't, refer to this article to resolve the issue first.
- Your Synology Router is running the latest version of SRM. If you cannot update to the latest version from Control Panel > System > Update & Restore, go to Download Center to download the.pat file to update manually.
- You can obtain Internet access when connecting a computer directly to the modem. If not, please contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Resolution
Please follow the methods A - F below in sequential order.
A. Make sure that all equipment is connected properly
- Check if the modem and Synology Router are both plugged into power outlets and powered on.
- Check if the following Ethernet cables are finger-tight at both ends:
- The cable connecting your modem's LAN port and the Synology Router's WAN port.
- The cable connecting the Synology Router's LAN port and your computer's Ethernet port (applicable only if your computer is connected via Ethernet).
- The corresponding LED indicators (indicated below) should light up. If they don't, test with another Ethernet cable or another device to make sure the issue doesn't arise from a faulty cable/device.
If a LAN LED indicator turns orange
If the WAN/WAN 1 LED indicator stays off even after replacing the cable or device
B. Restart the modem and Synology Router
- Unplug the modem and the Synology Router.
- Plug in and turn on the modem. Wait approximately two minutes until the LED indicators on the modem are back to normal.
- Plug in and turn on your Synology Router. Wait five minutes until the STATUS LED indicator lights up.

C. Clone the MAC address of your previous router or computer
Some ISPs might have registered the MAC address of your previous router or computer when you used their service the first time. This can prevent devices with other non-registered MAC addresses (such as a new Synology Router) from accessing the Internet. In this case, you need to clone the MAC address of your previous equipment to your Synology Router.
If you can access the Internet through your previous router
If you can access the Internet by connecting your computer directly to the modem
D. Check your ISP settings
Double-check that you have correctly entered the connection type and information provided by your ISP.
- Go to Network Center > Internet > Connection > Primary Interface > Detect connection type.
- Click Detect and see if the available connection types detected (such as Auto, DHCP, or PPPoE) are consistent with what your ISP provides.
- Check the connection type and information you entered to verify that they're correct.
- Some ISPs may require you to configure additional settings, such as DHCP options, IPTV/VoIP, or PPTP. Click on the buttons below to fill in the settings.
- If you're not sure whether your ISP requires these advanced settings, contact them to see if it is the case. You can refer to the articles below to complete the configurations:
- How do I set up my Synology Router to connect to the Internet using DHCP?
- How do I configure VLAN ID on my Synology Router for Internet connection?
- How do I set up a DS-Lite connection on Synology Router in Japan?
- What should I keep in mind when enabling MAP-E? (applicable only when your Synology Router's location is set to Japan)
E. Reset your Synology Router
Press and hold the RESET button for ten seconds to hard reset your Synology Router if your situation is either of the following:
- Some issues occurred during the initial setup of SRM, which prevented you from troubleshooting using previous methods.
- Your Synology Router had already been used and configured before you purchased it.
For more information on hard reset, please refer to this article.
F. Contact Synology for further diagnosis
For us to diagnose and resolve the issue as effectively as possible, please make sure that you have tried all of the methods above before contacting Synology Technical Support.
If the methods above did not help you establish Internet access, Synology Technical Support will need to look into your environment to identify the root cause. Since remote access to your Synology Router might be necessary during this process, please connect it according to the topology provided in the following steps. (If this isn't possible, please submit a support ticket directly).
- Go to Network Center > Internet > Connection > Secondary Interface (LAN 1). Enable the secondary interface, select Auto from the Connection type drop-down menu, and then click Apply.
- Power off the modem, your previous router, and Synology Router. Subsequently, connect these devices as shown below and power them on.
- Once you've set up the environment, your Synology Router should have Internet access. In SRM, go to Support Center > Contact Support to submit a support ticket. When describing the issue, please let us know that you've tried the troubleshooting recommendations in this article. We will reach out to you as soon as we can.
