What functions have changed after Photo Station and Synology Moments upgraded to Synology Photos?
Purpose
To upgrade user experience, Synology Photos rearranged some features from Photo Station and Synology Moments. Please see the paragraphs below for the major changes, new layout, and required settings.
Resolution
After Upgrading From Photo Station
- From albums to Shared Space folders:
Photo Station albums are now called "folders" in Synology Photos. "Albums" in Synology Photos represent the virtual collections you can create out of folder contents, which is similar to adding categories or tags to emails in certain mail services.
When launching Synology Photos for the first time, you will enter Shared Space. The albums originally saved in the source folder "/photo" will be shown as folders and arranged in their actual folder structure.
Though named Shared Space, if you did not share your albums before, they will stay private unless you share them later on. Access permissions can always be modified.1 - From Personal Photo Station albums to Personal Space folders:
If you enabled Personal Photo Station before, the photos and videos in the source folder "/home/photo" have been moved to the new source folder "/home/Photos" and shown in Personal Space. To switch to Personal Space, click.
Please note that the accounts and settings of Personal Photo Station no longer exist. - Shared Albums after the migration:
Most Shared Albums can be found in both the Albums tab and Sharing tab. The migration rules are as follows:- Shared Albums created by admin users have been migrated.
- Shared Albums created by non-admin users have only been migrated if you ticked Allow users to download photos and videos in Photo Station settings.
- The photos shared with the public one by one and listed in the Shared Album named Individual Photos have not been migrated.
- From Smart Albums to Conditional Albums:
Smart Albums are now renamed as Conditional Albums and can only be seen and used by admin users. However, due to changes in design, the following properties are no longer available:- Date uploaded
- Recently uploaded
- Recently commented on
- People tag
- Location tag
- Camera
- Lens
- Flash
- Rating
- Hyper Backup tasks:
Hyper Backup tasks that included Photo Station can no longer back up the package. To continue the backup, launch Hyper Backup, select the backup task, and go to Task Settings > Application and tick Synology Photos. - Permissions of the shared folder "/photo":
The shared folder "/photo" is now in UNIX mode. To assign specific access permissions to its sub-folders in File Station, you need to convert "/photo" to Windows ACL mode.3 See this article for more details. - A new mobile application:
To use Synology Photos on your mobile device, please download the new Synology Photos app from your app center. DS photo is not compatible with Synology Photos.4 To continue your previous backup task, please refer to this article.
After Upgrading From Synology Moments
- Change of folder directory:
All your DSM users' My Photo Library data that were saved in "/home/Drive/Moments" have been moved to the new source folder, "/home/Photos". The original contents can no longer be found in Synology Drive due to indexing mechanisms.
If you enabled Shared Photo Library, the original source folder "/photo" has become the Shared Space source folder in Synology Photos. - From Photo Libraries to Spaces:
My Photo Library is now Personal Space; Shared Photo Library is now Shared Space.
All the access permissions of Shared Photo Library have been migrated. However, as Synology Photos provides more detailed Shared Space permissions, you can further tailor the settings to your needs.1 - Direct photo management:
Synology Photos continues to support Timeline View and Folder View. Simply click/
to switch between the two display styles. Folder View now allows you to directly view the actual folder structure in File Station, copy/move files, and create/delete folders. The operations are synchronized with File Station.
- More dynamic albums:
You can now add photos from both Personal Space and Shared Space (previously My Photo Library and Shared Photo Library) to the same album. To create a new album, go to the Albums tab and click> Select photos to create album.
Unlike Shared Photo Library albums that are not owned by anyone, Shared Space albums belong to their creators. The albums migrated from Shared Photo Library have thus been randomly assigned to a user with access permission and shared with the other users who used to have access. - Facial recognition results:
If you enabled the People album during the first-time setup, the facial recognition results and groupings that were edited in Synology Moments will be migrated here. You can go to Albums > People to check the progress. Please note that due to changes in the algorithms, the results may be slightly altered.5 - Hyper Backup tasks:
Hyper Backup tasks that included Synology Moments can no longer back up the package. To continue the backup, launch Hyper Backup, select the backup task, and go to Task Settings > Application to tick Synology Photos. - A new mobile application:
To use Synology Photos on your mobile device, please download the new Synology Photos app from your app center. The Moments app is not compatible with Synology Photos.4 To continue your previous backup task, please refer to this article.
Notes:
- For more information on Shared Space permissions, please refer to this article.
- If none of the original album properties are supported, you will only see the Save as Album option.
- Permission changes made in File Station will not be applied to Synology Photos.

- To enable the People album, click the Account icon, go to Settings > Global, and tick Allow users to enable the People album. Next, go to the Personal/Shared Space tabs and tick Enable the People Album in Personal Space/Enable the People Album in Shared Space.
