How do I update to the latest DSM version from an older version?
Purpose
To ensure your Synology NAS operates with the latest features and security enhancements, it's vital to keep its DiskStation Manager (DSM) version current.
When your NAS isn't running the most recent DSM version, a notification will appear under Control Panel > Update & Restore. Click Download and you can initiate the installation of the new version.
This article guides you through the process of updating your DSM from an older version to the latest one.
Environment
- DSM 6.2.4 and above
- Per this end-of-availability notice, Synology no longer offers DSM 6.2.3 and earlier versions on its website. If you are updating from DSM 5 or an earlier version, ensure that you have all the required installation files, which will no longer be accessible for download via DSM Control Panel or our website.
Resolution
To update automatically:
Follow the update sequence indicated in Control Panel until your DSM version is up-to-date. For example, to update from DSM 6.0 to the latest version, you will download the following versions one by one:
- DSM 6.2.4-25556
- DSM 7.0.1-42218
- DSM 7.2-64570
To update manually:
To speed up the process, you can also download all update files at once. Follow the steps below to download all the required version(s) and manually install them in order.
- In Synology Download Center, select your product type and model.
- Scroll down to the middle section of the page and click the Operating System tab. Select your current DSM version and the version you're about to update to. An update sequence and the DSM version download links will be displayed.1
- Download all the required patch files.2 Directly updating to the latest version may lead to file corruption.
- On your Synology NAS, go to Control Panel > Update & Restore (or DSM Update in older versions) and click Manual DSM Update. Select the downloaded patches.3
- Repeat this process for any additional updates until you reach the desired DSM version.4
Notes:
- The versions must be installed one by one in the sequence listed.
- DSM patch files (.pat) must match with your Synology NAS model.
- Patch files do not need to be extracted before installation.
- Your Synology NAS will reboot after each update. Please expect service downtime during the update process.
- If there are further updates after installation, the system will notify you, and you can continue updating until your DSM is fully up-to-date. For those setting up DSM on empty drives, you can install the latest version available right from the start.
