How do I sync data between multiple Synology NAS via Cloud Station?
Purpose
Cloud Station is a file sharing service that allows you to synchronize files between a host Synology NAS and multiple client Synology NAS, computers, and mobile devices. To sync your data among multiple Synology NAS, one Synology NAS has to be chosen as the host server, and the paired Synology NAS will act as client devices. This tutorial will show you how to sync data between multiple Synology NAS.
Notes:
- Synology Cloud Station Server is not supported on DSM 7.0.
- Synology has discontinued support for Synology Cloud Station Server as of April 30, 2021. We recommend upgrading to Synology Drive Server to sync data between multiple NAS.
Environment
- Cloud Station Server (or Synology Drive) is installed on your host Synology NAS (available in the Download Center).
- Cloud Station ShareSync is installed on your client Synology NAS (available in the Download Center).
Resolution
Add a new NAS to establish the connection
To sync files between the host NAS and the client Synology NAS, you must establish a connection first.
To add a new NAS:
- Enter the IP address or QuickConnect ID, username, and password of your host Synology NAS device.1 For domain users, use your domain name/username to log in. For LDAP users, use "username@Base_DN" to log in. You can also log in with IPv6.2
- If you cannot connect to the host Synology NAS device, go to Control Panel > Network > General to enable proxies. Enter your proxy settings to connect to your host Synology NAS device. Refer to this article for more information.
- Tick the checkbox of the remote and local shared folders you want to sync. Click Apply.3
- After the setup has been completed, a new connection will appear in sync tasks.
- You can then either create more sync tasks on the connected NAS, or add another new NAS by clicking
and following these steps again.
Notes:
- If your host NAS and client NAS are in different locations, and you would like to use external IP address to establish the connection, port forwarding is required. Since Cloud Station Server is involved in the connection, the port 6690 needs to be forwarded on your router. Refer to this article for more information.
- If Cloud Station ShareSync fails to verify the SSL certificate, it may mean that it is an untrusted self-signed certificate, or someone may be trying to intercept your connection. Go to Control Panel > Security > Certificate for more information. Cloud Station ShareSync uses RC4 128-bit and MD5 for SSL encryption. Refer to this article for more information.
- Follow the steps below on your centralized NAS to enable the shared folders in Cloud Station Server, or Synology Drive Admin Console for Drive.
- For Cloud Station Server: Go to Settings > Sync Settings. Select the shared folder you want to synchronize, and then click Enable.
- For Synology Drive Admin Console: Go to Team Folder. Select the shared folder you want to synchronize, and then click Enable.
