Upload Files or Folders
File Station offers multiple methods for uploading files and folders from your local computer to the Synology NAS.
Upload Local Files and Folders
To upload files:
You can upload normal files (i.e., files with data inside) from the local computer to File Station.
- Go to the left panel of File Station.
- Right-click on a shared folder to which you want to upload files.
- Click Upload, and then click Upload - Skip or Upload - Overwrite to manage how to handle file conflicts.
- In the pop-up window, select desired files on your local computer and begin the upload.
To upload files/folders via drag and drop:
You can drag and drop local files/folders to File Station from the local desktop or via the native file explorer (e.g., Mac Finder), depending on the item type and browser type:
- Normal files: Use Firefox, Google Chrome, or Safari (14 or above) for drag and drop uploads.
- 0 KB files: Use Firefox or Google Chrome for drag and drop uploads.
- Folders: Use Google Chrome for drag and drop uploads.
If file/folder conflicts occur, you may select Always overwrite files when I drag and drop them onto Web browser or paste with keyboard shortcuts (at Settings > General > File Station) as the default policy.
To view the upload queue:
While you are uploading files to the Synology NAS, an upload icon will appear on the DSM taskbar. Click on it to see more details, such as the upload progress and speed.
Upload Limitations:
- You can add up to 1,000 files to your upload queue.
- Web browsers have different upload capacities:
- Firefox/Google Chrome/Safari (10 or above): No upload limitations.
- In a non-encrypted shared folder, file/folder name should be within 255 characters (up to about 80 characters for non-Latin languages), and the file path should be within 4,096 characters; in an encrypted shared folder, it should be within 143 characters (up to about 47 characters for non-Latin languages), and the file path should be within 2,048 characters.
Note:
- To let other people upload files to your Synology NAS, you can create and send them file request links.
- If the file you want to upload to a WriteOnce shared folder has the same name as any locked or expired files within that folder, you will not be able to perform the upload task.
