HDD Hibernation

You can specify the period of time drives remain idle before entering HDD hibernation mode. During HDD hibernation, drives stop spinning, reducing power consumption and extending the lifespan of drives. You can specify different periods of time for internal drives and external eSATA/USB drives.

Learn more about the different hibernation modes.

Note:

  • All hibernations, including deep sleep, cease upon access.
  • Only certain external USB storage devices support HDD hibernation.
  • To turn off hibernation, go to Control Panel > Hardware & Power > HDD Hibernation, and select none from the first drop-down menu.
  • If your Synology NAS does not go into hibernation mode, refer to this article for more information.

Deep Sleep

Deep sleep for expansion units can be enabled through the paired Synology NAS interface. You can configure the expansion unit and paired Synology NAS to idle for different periods of time. Therefore, the expansion unit can be set to enter deep sleep while the paired Synology NAS remains online.

During deep sleep mode:

  • All LEDs of the expansion unit will be off.
  • The power to the drives of the expansion unit will be cut off.
  • The fan of the expansion unit will stop.

Note:

  • To ensure normal operation when using the deep sleep function on an expansion unit, please slide its Auto/Manual switch on the back panel to Auto.

Auto Poweroff

You can specify the length of time period for which the internal drive stays in hibernation before your Synology NAS automatically powers off. To enable auto poweroff, you must enable internal HDD hibernation first.

To remotely power up your Synology NAS later, you must enable the WOL service first.
