The shift to Synology was a game-changer for us. It provided a new foundation for our IT infrastructure that was efficient, secure, and scalable. Synology was key in unlocking our full potential, meeting our needs, and resolving critical issues.
Djul Haidir, IT Section Head at IBS
The Challenge
PT. Infrastruktur Bisnis Sejahtera (IBS) develops all of its applications in-house. These applications, which are critical to their daily operations, are fully integrated into their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and powered by a comprehensive virtualization platform. This platform plays a crucial role in managing key services such as quality control, research and development, Windows Servers, MIS, intranet, and e-invoicing systems. The ongoing need for testing, development, and operation of their applications places virtualization at the heart of their IT foundation.
However, challenges arose with their existing virtualization software, which was a free version that couldn't be upgraded without purchasing a subscription-based license.
Furthermore, the lack of automatic backups and snapshots in their virtualization software meant that they had to do things manually. Not only was this labor-intensive, but it could only be done while their virtual machines were offline, which resulted in substantial service downtime. The situation reached a critical point when a ransomware attack infected a high-ranking officer’s PC, exposing significant vulnerabilities in their IT system.
On top of that, as the company's data grew, they encountered difficulties in expanding storage on their Linux-based server, and complex command-line operations put extra strain on the IT team.
IBS acknowledged the need for a stronger IT framework—one that would provide an advanced virtualization system, integrated backups, dependable and expandable server storage, and an easily deployable server system.
The Solution
After facing these challenges with their IT infrastructure, IBS found a game-changing solution with Synology, which was recommended by another IT team inside their corporate group. Synology's built-in application software, capable of performing continuous background backups, was the determining factor.
They decided to deploy a Synology FS3017 for hosting production environments, complemented by an RX1217sas expansion unit to enhance their file-sharing capabilities.
Through the use of Synology Virtual Machine Manager, IBS resolved the issue of outdated virtualization software, centralizing their in-house applications in a single virtualization environment. At the same time, the ability to upgrade Synology's network to 10GbE directly addressed IBS's increasing hosting needs, and Synology's subscription-less design eliminated concerns over software versioning and licensing fees for a more predictable and manageable IT budget.
IBS replaced manual backup processes with Synology Active Backup for Business and Snapshot Replication, automating virtual machine backups and daily data snapshots. This guaranteed the uninterrupted operation of their production servers and enhanced their defense against security threats like ransomware.
The implementation of Synology's scalable storage solution allowed IBS to address their growing data needs as well as the storage expansion limitations of their Linux-based server. This change simplified storage expansion and reduced the number of command-line operations, easing the IT team's workload.
Also, with Synology Drive as their private cloud system, they were able to move away from public cloud services for a much more scalable, secure, and cost-effective alternative without the recurring fees. This not only enhanced their data management capabilities but also strengthened security and control over external file sharing by including features like password protection and shared file expiration dates.
In conclusion, the adoption of Synology's solutions at IBS effectively addressed their IT challenges, leading to a significant enhancement of their IT capabilities. This strategic overhaul underscores the importance of choosing the right technological solutions to drive business growth and ensure security.
