Computer technology advances and becomes obsolete at a pace unlike any other human activity. At the PEEK&POKE Computer Museum, our primary task is to preserve this digital heritage.
Davor Pasarić, co-founder and curator
The Challenge
At PEEK&POKE Computer Museum, hundreds of computers running various antiquated operating systems are preserved to run legacy software. As older media decays and becomes increasingly unreliable, they must be backed up and securely stored to preserve humanity's technological heritage.
Davor Pasarić, the museum's co-founder and curator, said, "The responsibility for preserving human digital heritage is still not clearly defined. Classic museums that preserve physical objects often have a more straightforward objective. On the other hand, software or digital products serve as a means of preserving information. Being intangible and with varying dependencies, it is often a challenge to replicate software and hardware environments to ensure that they can be preserved for future generations to see."
The museum's IT requirements steadily increased as they added more and more to their collection. They needed something more robust to sustain and protect their mission.
The Solution
PEEK&POKE Computer Museum found the perfect solution with a Synology storage system. More than just providing raw storage, Synology solutions enabled the museum to easily and securely connect from remote locations, increasing the team's efficiency. Without a large IT department, the simple and intuitive user interface ensured that setting up and maintaining the system didn't burden the team.
Synology's storage solutions are easily scalable, as the need for additional storage continues to increase with each new item the museum collects. Combined with ample backup capabilities, the museum can continue its mission while knowing it's in good hands.
The PEEK&POKE Computer Museum is one of the few permanent displays of vintage computing technology in Europe. Established in 2007 as a non-profit educational project by a group of computer enthusiasts, the museum now covers 300 square meters and features over 2,000 exhibits showcasing both global and local computer history.
