My guest network is not functioning properly when the mesh Wi-Fi system has been set up. What can I do?
Purpose
This article will provide you solutions on how to make your guest network function properly when a mesh Wi-Fi system has been set up.
Diagnosis
Setting up a mesh Wi-Fi system using a switch to bridge the primary and additional Wi-Fi points via Ethernet cables may result to malfunctioning of the guest network of your Synology router.
Resolution
To check if the guest network issue arises from the switch, connect Wi-Fi points directly via Ethernet cables without the switch first.
Your client device cannot get an IP address from the guest network
- The VLAN ID (i.e., VID) 1733 must be assigned to the guest network of a Synology mesh Wi-Fi system. If you connect all the Wi-Fi points of the mesh Wi-Fi system by a switch, please go to the management interface of the switch via a web browser, setting the port VID of each Wi-Fi point as "1733".
- Port 5 (i.e., g5) is connected to the RT2600ac that serves as the primary Wi-Fi point, while port 13 (i.e., g13) is connected to the additional Wi-Fi point, MR2200ac. To make the guest network of the Synology mesh Wi-Fi system work normally, the VIDs of the two ports must be set as "1733".1
(Please see the sample configuration below)
Please contact the manufacturer (e.g., Netgear, Cisco, TP-Link, etc.) of your switch if you have any questions concerning its configurations.
Your client device is connected to the guest network but cannot access the Internet
- To solve the issue, please connect a client computer (e.g., a Windows PC or Mac) to the guest network and enter the command lines below in a command prompt or terminal emulator:
- If you receive a Ping reply from "8.8.8.8" but cannot get the IP address of "www.synology.com" using
nslookup
, the guest network issue might resulted from the malfunctioning DNS resolution of your Synology Router. Please follow the troubleshooting steps below: - Go to SRM > Network Center > Internet > Connection > Manually Configure DNS Server.
- Enter "8.8.8.8" (Google's public DNS server) in the Preferred DNS Server or Alternative DNS Server field.
- If you have installed DNS Server on your Synology Router and wish to set up a DNS resolution service with this package, go to SRM > DNS Server > Resolution. Please make sure you have ticked the Enable resolution services and enter "8.8.8.8" in the Forwarder 1 or Forwarder 2 field.2
- If you cannot receive a Ping reply from "8.8.8.8", it means there might be some problems with the external connection of your Synology Router. In such case, please sign in to your Synology Account to submit a technical support ticket attached with your ping/nslookup results and a diagram of network topology.
ping 8.8.8.8
nslookup www.synology.com
Notes:
- If the guest network cannot function properly after you follow the steps above, please disable the STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) option on your switch and then check if the problem has been solved.
- If your Synology Router devices are located in China, specify the DNS server as "114.114.114.114" or "114.114.115.115" instead in the steps above.
