Synology Assistant

Device Information

Synology Assistant can display the following Synology storage system information:

  • Server name
  • IP address
  • IP status
  • Server status
  • MAC address
  • Firmware version
  • Model
  • Product serial number
  • WOL (Wake-on-LAN) status

Synology Assistant Capabilities

  • Discover and connect to Synology devices on the local network.
  • Check Synology device status.
  • Centrally manage printers connected to a Synology storage system.
  • Map shared folders as network drives.
  • Use WOL to wake up Synology storage system remotely.
  • Run memory diagnostic tests for Synology storage system and routers.

Limitations

  • Printer setup is supported only for printers listed in the Synology Product Compatibility List.
  • USB printers must be connected directly to the Synology storage system or router through a USB port, not through a USB hub.
  • Memory card functions on connected printers are not supported.
  • Synology storage systems cannot provide services while a memory diagnostic test is running.
  • Synology HD, FS, SA, XS+, and XS series models released from 2022 onward no longer support network printers or USB printers.
  • Synology Plus, Value, and J series models from the 23-series and later no longer support connecting to printers via USB.
  • RC18015xs+ does not support USB printers.

Storage System Setup and Management

  • Set up, install, and manage DSM from a mobile device.
  • Search for and connect to storage systems on the same local network.
  • Use the installation wizard to install DSM on a storage system.
    • Create Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) as the default RAID type during setup.
  • Manage multiple storage systems from one mobile application.
  • Customize the Wake-on-LAN (WOL) port to wake the storage system over the Internet.
  • Shut down or restart the storage system directly from a mobile device.
  • Trigger the storage system beep sound to identify the device location.
  • Monitor storage usage and drive health.
  • Manage users, including adding and deleting users, managing account passwords and status, and assigning user groups.
  • Configure DSM update settings to automatically install important updates, install all updates, or check for updates automatically.
  • View system and network information.

Security, Notifications, and Synology Account

  • Enable push notifications for specific system events.
  • Configure Auto IP Block, including block rules, block lists, and allow lists.
  • Bind each storage system to a Synology Account.
    • Enable and configure QuickConnect for WAN access.
    • Enable Synology Active Insight to monitor the storage system.

Limitations

  • Only administrator accounts can sign in to DS finder.
  • Supports installing DSM only on models with names that begin with "DS".

File Management and Access

  • Manage files stored on a Synology storage system through a secure HTTPS connection.
  • Browse pictures, watch videos, and view work documents on the go.
  • Sign in securely through SSL/TLS connections.
  • Verify server certificates installed on Synology storage systems.
  • Share credentials with other Synology mobile applications and record login history to reduce repeated credential entry.
  • Upload, download, move, copy, and rename files.
  • Add frequently accessed files to My Favorites.
  • Pin files as Offline Files for access without an internet connection.
  • Show ongoing upload and download tasks and their individual status.

Supported file formats may differ depending on mobile device compatibility.

Sharing and Archives

  • Share files and folders through custom links.
  • Protect shared links with validity periods and passwords.
  • Archive and extract items to save storage space and protect sensitive data with passwords.
  • Extract .zip, .tar, .gz, .tgz, .rar, .7z, and .iso files in ISO 9660 and Joliet formats.

Photo Backup

  • Back up photos from a mobile device to a Synology storage system.
  • Back up only new photos and videos, or back up both new and existing photos and videos.
  • Upload photos and videos only on Wi-Fi.
  • Back up photos only, without videos.
  • Preserve original file names, or replace file names with the file creation date when this option is not enabled.
  • Upload only Live Photos, or upload both photos and videos for Live Photo items.
  • Remove photos and videos already backed up to a Synology storage system to free mobile device storage.
