• Glacier Backup backs up files to Amazon Glacier in the following regions:

  • South America (São Paulo)
  • Canada (Central)
  • EU (Ireland, Frankfurt, London, Paris, Stockholm)
  • Asia Pacific (Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, Mumbai)
  • China (Beijing, Ningxia)
• Glacier Backup restores all files or selected files to Synology NAS.
• Deleted backup tasks can be retrieved after they are saved to the Amazon Glacier account.
• File transfer encryption protects data during transfer.
• Backups use file-level incremental backup and file-based deduplication within the same backup task.
• Backed up files can be preserved at the destination even when files are removed from the source.
• Backup schedules can run hourly, daily, monthly, or yearly at selected times and dates.
• The centralized console can browse, manage, restore, and delete backed up files and folders.
• Logs include detailed task events and times and can be exported.
• When deleting data uploaded within the past 90 days, Glacier Backup schedules deletion for 90 days after upload to reduce early deletion costs.

Limitations

• As of December 15, 2025, Amazon Glacier no longer accepts new users or accounts, but existing users can still create backup and restoration tasks and existing tasks continue to work.
• Amazon Glacier Deep Archive is not supported.
• GovCloud US is not supported.
• Restoration takes 4 to 5 hours on average and depends on the network environment and cloud service.
• Restoration fails if destination shared folders for restoration are renamed or deleted.
• Backing up a restored task is not available.
• Other backup applications, such as Hyper Backup, are unavailable while a Glacier Backup task is running.
• Remote folders cannot be used as backup sources or restore destinations.
• Multipart upload parts can be up to 512 MB.
• Backup task names must be 1 to 32 Unicode characters and cannot contain any of the following characters: !, ", #, $, %, &, ', (, ), *, +, ,, /, :, ;, <, =, >, ?, @, [, ], \, ^, `, {, }, |, or ~.
