External Device Overview

DSM can manage external devices connected to a Synology storage system, such as external drives, printers, and USB storage devices.

DSM can also configure a storage system as a print server so client computers or mobile devices connected to the storage system can access printers.

External Storage

DSM supports file systems and access controls for external storage devices.

Capability File system types
File systems supported on external storage devices ext4, ext3, FAT32, NTFS, Btrfs, exFAT, HFS+
File systems that can be used to format external storage devices ext4, FAT32, exFAT
  • Configure access permissions for all connected external storage devices, such as assigning permissions to specific users or groups.
  • Restrict USB port usage to block all types of external USB storage devices from connecting to the storage system.
  • Perform a S.M.A.R.T. test on external storage devices to determine the drive status and condition.

Printers and Printing Protocols

The following printing protocols are supported:

  • LPR
  • IPP
  • Socket
  • BJNP

Printing Limitations

  • Synology HD, FS, SA, XS+, and XS series models released from 2022 onward no longer support network printers or USB printers.
  • Synology Plus, Value, and J series models from the 23-series and later no longer support connecting to printers via USB.
  • RC18015xs+ does not support USB printers.
