System Requirements

  • A high-availability cluster requires two identical Synology NAS devices. Hybrid high-availability clusters using different models are supported only in specific scenarios.
  • Both Synology NAS devices must have identical DSM and SHA versions, drive numbers and capacities, system partitions, and drive slot layouts. Learn more

Cluster Operation and Management

  • Replicates data in real time between active and passive servers.
  • Performs automatic failover to minimize service interruption caused by storage failures, network connectivity loss, or hardware failures.
  • Provides a unified interface for managing and monitoring the high-availability cluster.
  • Displays CPU, memory, and drive utilization for both servers on the dashboard.
  • Includes built-in troubleshooting workflows to help diagnose cluster issues.
  • Supports updating DSM and installed packages on both servers.
  • Supports shutting down or restarting the entire cluster or individual servers.
  • Supports adding a quorum server to reduce the risk of split-brain scenarios.
  • Allows manual switchover to test high-availability behavior.
  • Limitations:
    • HDD hibernation is not supported in a high-availability cluster.
    • Users cannot log in to the passive server because all services run on the active server.
    • Creating and maintaining a high-availability cluster can reduce random write performance by up to 15%. Learn more

Storage, Network, and Power

  • Supports RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10, RAID F1, JBOD, and Basic.
  • Supports up to 64 volumes and LUNs per cluster. Actual limits vary by model.
    • Up to 1 PB of total volume and LUN capacity for clusters whose system partitions were created on DSM 7.1 or later.
    • Up to 400 TB of total volume and LUN capacity for clusters whose system partitions were created before DSM 7.1.
  • Allows creating WriteOnce (WORM) or encrypted volumes when both servers support these features.
  • Requires at least one static IP address for communication with client devices.
  • Requires active and passive servers to use the same Link Aggregation mode based on network configuration.
  • Requires Heartbeat connection latency to be below 1 ms.
  • Requires the Heartbeat network to be free of DHCP servers.
  • Supports SNMP UPS, USB UPS, and Synology UPS servers.
  • Limitations:
    • SHR-formatted volumes and M.2 volumes are not supported.
    • Drive positions cannot be changed after cluster creation.
    • USB device switchover and failover are not supported.
    • USB devices are accessible only when connected to the active server.
    • IPv6, PPPoE, and Wi-Fi are not supported for network connections.
    • The Heartbeat interface does not support VLAN IDs.
    • Link Aggregation mode cannot be changed after cluster creation.

Package and Feature Compatibility

  • Incompatible packages or features:
    • PetaSpace
    • Migration Assistant
    • Virtual Machine Manager cluster features
    • Synology MailPlus Server cluster features
  • Limitations:
    • Synology Directory Server should be configured after cluster creation. Refer to the User Guide if already installed.
    • Cluster shutdown and restart cannot be performed using Synology Central Management System (CMS).
    • Hybrid high-availability clusters
      • Hybrid Share folders cannot be mounted on hybrid high-availability clusters.
      • If Surveillance Station is switched to the server that has a lower maximum camera capacity, the IP cameras that exceed the limit will be stopped.
      • Virtual Machine Manager is not supported on hybrid high-availability clusters.
      • M.2 SSD caching is not supported on hybrid high-availability clusters that use different built-in M.2 slot types.
