Quick Install Guide: Installing the Synology Server
From SynologyWiki
Step 1:When the Synology Assistance has been successfully installed and it does detect the Synology Server, it will present the window as displayed on the right. This window is requesting the location of the ".pat" file, which is the firmware to your Synology Server. The Synology server cannot be used until this software is installed.
Step 2:Select the browse button on the menu, and find your ".pat" file, which is available on your CD, or you may download the latest file from our website
Step 3:From here, you may use "One-click" setup, or "Step-by-step" setup. With One-Click setup, all default values are entered into the Synology Server, and finishes with relative ease. If you wish to elect for the Step-by-Step setup, please refer to the next part of this guide for further information.
Step 4:After finishing One-Click Setup or Step-by-Step Setup, the Synology Assistant will begin programming the requested settings for the Synology Server. Also, it will begin to format your System partition and upload the firmware that was selected in Step 2. Note, for single-bay models, the Synology Assistant will format the data volume for you to get started, for multi-bay models, the volume will have to be formated from the Web Management Menu
Step 5:After uploading the firmware, the Synology Assistant will instruct the Synology Server to reboot, and it can take upwards of 600 seconds to have the system restart and initialize itself.
Step 6:After the reboot is finished, and the Synology Assistant regains communication with the Synology Product, it will finish the final settings of the server
Step 7:When the server is finished being installed, the Synology Assistant will present the following screen denoting that it is finished.
| |
Step 8:Pressing "OK" from the previous step and ask the Synology Assistant to launch your default web-browser and take you to the Web Management Menu. You are now ready to start using the Synology Server |
Common problems during initial setup
The Synology Assistant will display the above error if it cannot communicate with the Synology Server, or if it doesn't detect any Synology Server. Please make sure of the following to insure proper communications between your computer and the Synology Product
- Make sure that the Synology Assistant is not being blocked by Anti-malware programs, such as Windows-Firewall, Windows User Account Control, Norton Anti-Virus, Norton Internet Security, and others
- Make sure that the Synology Product is connected to the network and is on. Please make sure that the LAN LED on the Synology product is active
- Make sure that your computer is connected to the network, and that you have the ability of accessing Network Resources
- Make sure that no other programs are using ports 9997, 9998, 9999. These ports are used by the Synology Assistant to perform the the initial communications between the Synology Assistant and Synology product. It is noted that computers that are built by Acer and possibly Dell have proprietary programs which use the above listed ports
- You may use the following link to help aid in determining which ports are in use.
- For Windows computers, please make sure that Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing Services are installed in the LAN Properties
- For Windows computers, make sure that File and Printer Sharing Services are enabled via Windows Firewall, Windows UAC, and Anti-malware software.
- If the Synology Server does not get an IP address from a DHCP Server (i.e. if you connect your computer directly to the Synology Server), the Synology Server will use a 169.254.x.x IP address. You might need to change your computer's network settings to be able to see the Synology Server.
