How to install a USB Printer, Mac Computer

This guide will guide user on how to install a printer on a Macintosh using a compatible USB Printer for the Synology Product.
Please refer to the following list of printers which are noted to be compatible with the Synology product.

When connecting a compatible printer with the Synology product, it will appear in the management menu under [Admin Menu] -> [External Devices] -> [USB Printer].
Please note the Clean button to purge the Spool Space

Note: Synology only supports POSTSCRIPT printers for Macintosh Systems. Please verify that your printer is PostScript capable if you are using a Macintosh!


MacOS X 10.3

via AppleTalk

Step 1:

  • Go to Go -> Applications -> Utilities

Step 2:

  • Find Printer Setup Utility and open the dialog box

Step 3:

  • Select Add to add a new printer

Step 4:

  • Select AppleTalk
  • Afterwards, select the Synology Server which the printer is attached to

Step 5:

  • Select Generic for Printer Model

Step 6:

  • Select Add to finish


via TCP/IP

Step 1:

  • Go to Go -> Applications -> Utilities

Step 2:

  • Find Printer Setup Utility and open the dialog box

Step 3:

  • Select Add to add a new printer

Step 4:

  • Select IP Printing

Step 5:

  • Afterwards, select LDP/LPR for the Printer Type
  • Enter the Printer's addrss
  • Enter usbprinter for the Queue Name
  • Select Generic for Printer Model
  • Select Add to finish


MacOS X 10.2

via AppleTalk

Step 1:

  • Go to Go -> Applications -> Utilities

Step 2:

  • Select Printer Center

Step 3:

  • Select Add to setup a new printer

Step 4:

  • Select the Synology server that the printer is connected to and then choose AppleTalk

Step 5:

  • Select Generic for the Printer model

Step 6:

  • Select Add to finish


via TCP/IP

Step 1:

  • Go to Go -> Applications -> Utilities

Step 2:

  • Select Printer Center

Step 3:

  • Select Add to setup a new printer

Step 4:

  • Select IP Printing under type

Step 5:

  • Enter the Synology Box address of where the printer is attached to
  • Uncheck Use default queue on server, and enter usbprinter for the queue name

Step 6:

  • Select Generic for the printer model

Step 7:

  • Select Add to finish
