This article will briefly cover how to enable the File Sharing abilities for computers running Apple's OS X 10.5 "Leopard", Microsoft's Windows XP or Windows Vista. For additional support for setting up a computer for File Sharing outside of this article, please consider consulting with a Computer/Network Technician or the Synology Community Forum.
How to Enable File Sharing services on OS X 10.5 "Leopard"

Step 1:
- Open the System Preferences
- Look at the Internet and Network category
- Click on Sharing
|

Step 2:
|
|
Step 3:
- Open the System Preferences
- Look at the Personal category
- Click on Security
|
|
Step 4:
- Click on the Firewall
- Make sure File Sharing is enabled on the list
|

How to Enable File Sharing services on Windows XP
|
|
|
Step 1:
- Go to Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Local Network Connections, Right Click and Click
Properties
|
|
Step 2:
Make sure that following services, protocols are enabled and set up properly.
Note: Default configuration is recommended.
- Minimum components
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
- Recommended services, if supported

Step 3:
Open Windows Firewall from Control Panel
- A. Make sure that the Firewall is Enabled and the Don't Allow Exceptions is Disabled unless the
computer is located within an unsecured network.
- B. Click on the Exceptions Tab when finished
|

Step 4:
- Enable File and Printer Sharing on the Exception List.

How to Enable File Sharing services on Windows Vista
|
|
|
Step 1:
- Go to Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Connections
- Click on View Status of the Local Area Connection
|
|
Step 2:

|
Step 3:
Make sure that following services, protocols are enabled and set up properly.
Note: Default configuration is recommended.
- Minimum Components
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
- Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
- Recommended Services, if supported
- QoS Packet Scheduler
- Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
- Vista Components
- Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver
- Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder

Step 4:
After configuring the Local Connection Properties, proceed by
- Enable File Sharing
- Proceed to the Windows Firewall

Step 6:
- A. Make sure that the Firewall is Enabled and the Don't Allow Exceptions is Disabled unless the
