"Synology Helped us to grow as a company by offering real value." - Breck Gabler, Managing Partner

The Company

Founded in Brooksville, Florida, Future Proof Surveillance Networks began with the premise that their clients deserve surveillance systems built upon up-to-date technology. Analog systems are built on technology more than 60 years old, and are reaching the end of their usable lives. An effective surveillance system requires a level of clarity unobtainable using analog NTSC solutions.

"Interlaced video is just fine if you like to guess what happened," says Breck Gabler, a managing partner of FPSN, LLC. "If you want to actually see what happened, you need 100% digital all IP based technology."

FPSN advocates the use of megapixel or greater cameras to achieve the greatest image clarity. By creating the systems using today’s state of the art, rather than antiquated technology, they help their customers future-proof their networks. However, the best part is that their clients can clearly see what happened, today.

The Challenge

As IP-based surveillance is a young technology, small agile companies are still creating novel solutions to emerging problems. The lack of satisfactory existing solutions leaves ample opportunities for innovative integrators.

When tasked to come up with a surveillance system suitable for a bus system, FPSN started with a high-quality camera, but needed a reliable and compact method to store the video. In order to integrate with their proposed model, such a system should be low-power and operate from a 12 volt system with a minimum of modification. To mitigate the effects of environmental vibration, the system should use an SSD (solid state drive) in lieu of platter-based drives. They knew that all the surveillance data in the world is of limited utility if it cannot be accessed on demand. They began to look at more suitable network attached storage systems and found Synology to be the perfect fit for not only this project but other industries.

The Solution

Breck began looking into Synology’s numerous DiskStation offerings. After speaking with one of Synology’s product specialists, he opted for a DiskStation DS109, as it provided a combination of size, cost and power requirements, and Surveillance Station 5. The one-bay DiskStation was fitted with an SSD to minimize the power draw and help with resistance to vibrations. The server was installed with DiskStation Manager 3.0, and was quickly integrated into his mobile solution platform.

Future Proof Surveillance Networks

FPSN’s mobile solution leverages hemispheric, high-resolution cameras and the DS109 running Surveillance Station 5. Surveillance Station 5 provides a cost-effective, unified software interface that can tie together multiple camera brands. By integrating multiple single-camera Surveillance Stations with a master station, his clients can monitor up to 36 channels at once in real time.

Surveillance Station 5 places FPSN’s customers firmly in control of their mobile surveillance networks. Users can alter the cameras and/or recording behavior through a single interface. Using Synology’s Time Slicing allows for quick scanning of recorded feeds by dividing videos into four simultaneous streams. The user remains in control as to how much space can be used by a given camera before its storage is rolled over.

With scheduled and event recording, the system can be set to only record motion events during off hours to make the most of the available storage. When coupled with email or SMS notifications, event recording can be a powerful tool to help safeguard the vehicles.

“At Future Proof Surveillance Networks, we’re determined to bring high-quality video surveillance to places that have never had it,” says Breck. “Until now, transit systems have not had affordable access to surveillance systems of this caliber. Synology has made it that much easier to bring clear surveillance images to mobile users. No more guessing.”

FPSN continues its mission to bring innovative surveillance solutions to answer emerging needs. As new needs arise, Breck will be looking for more ways to use new and existing technology to provide cost-effective, crystalclear surveillance, powered by Synology.
