Surveillance Station 3

The Synology Surveillance Station 31 provides you with an easy and economical network video recording solution. By connecting supported IP cameras to the network and following simple steps to configure your DiskStation, you can start to safeguard your environment with video live-view, video recording, event playback, and event notifications, all with the AJAX-based web interface of Surveillance Station 3.

Adding Cameras

The DSM 2.2 supports hundreds of IP camera models from over 10 manufacturers, including mega-pixel cameras and audio-enabled cameras.

Auto-search

Adding cameras is straightforward. Quick Setup and Complete Setup are available for you to choose at your preference. Both come with a search feature that automatically searches available cameras2 on the same network. All you need to do is choose the camera to set up from the search result, and enter its username and password. This eliminates the trouble of remembering the camera's model name and IP address.

For cameras not officially supported, you can also try choosing User Define and manually entering the source path to see if it works.

Camera list

For DiskStation models that support multiple IP cameras, the "Camera" list provides you with a centralized place to manage the cameras. You can add, delete, edit, and enable any cameras with well-organized buttons.

Video Settings

The Surveillance Station 3 supports MJPEG and MPEG4 video format. For each camera, you can decide the frame rate and resolution to be used for live-view and video recording.

Recordings

Recording modes

DiskStation Manager 2.2 supports four recording modes:

  1. Continuous Recording
  2. Motion Detection Recording
  3. Alarm Recording Mode
  4. Motion Detection and Alarm Recording

For motion detection recording, you can rely on the built-in motion detection mechanism of the camera, or leave it to Surveillance Station 3 (MJPEG only). You can designate up to 10 detection areas on the camera view, and only motion detected inside the area will be recorded.

Audio recording is supported when the audio input is available on the camera.

Schedule

To set a recording schedule - simply choose a recording mode and click on the preferred hours to set the time. You can select a certain day by tapping on the day of the week, a certain hour everyday by tapping the hour column, or all hours by tapping on the top-left corner.

Archive rotation

To give you a better control of disk space on your DiskStation, you can limit each camera’s archive rotation by file size or recording days.

Live View

The Live View page displays real-time videos of all configured cameras. For cameras that support PTZ (Pan/Tilt/Zoom) or audio, you can use the buttons on the right-hand panel to adjust the camera’s shooting angle and audio volume.

In addition to the optical zoom feature provided by the camera, the Surveillance Station 3 also provides digital zoom function for immediate operation. You can drag-n-move the video screen with your mouse, or double-click on the video screen to enlarge it to fit the frame instantaneously.

If you see something on the live view that you would like to save, simply click on the snapshot button to save the image.

Surveillance Station 3 also allows you to view camera live-view in full-screen mode.

Layout management

The flexible layout management allows you to choose a preferred layout style, and customize it by dragging and dropping cameras to the selected layout cells. Once set, the customized layout will be available in the live view page for easy selection.

Event

Under the Event tab, you can browse and manage all recorded events, filter the events with optional settings, play them with the Event Player, export, delete the videos, or lock a critical event to protect it from being deleted during archive rotation.

Event player

When playing a recorded video, you can use the control buttons to fast forward, slow down, zoom-in and zoom out, or drag-n-move the video. You can also skip to the previous or next event. Pausing the video gives you the ability to skip to previous/next frame, and to take a snapshot and save the picture.

Timeline

The timeline allows you to watch all recorded events of a camera on a certain day. You can easily find the event you are seeking by sliding the arrow button, or switch between Day and Hour mode for different scale of timeline. The gray bar above the time scale shows the time intervals where videos have been recorded, and events recorded during Motion Detection and Alarm Recoding modes are marked in different colors. Detailed event information is listed beside the event player.

Sync Playback

Sync Playback allows you to simultaneously watch videos of up to 4 channels on the same timeline. You can easily find the event you are seeking by sliding the arrow button, or switch between Day and Hour mode for different scale of timeline. The gray bar above the time scale shows the time intervals where videos have been recorded.

When playing the recorded videos, you can fast forward, slow down, zoom-in and zoom out, or drag-n-move the picture. Pausing the video gives you the ability to take a snapshot and save the picture.

Centralized Management

Centralized management helps you to easily manage cameras installed on multiple DiskStations in the case of a large deployment. After proper setting, you can monitor the live-view of all cameras installed on multiple DiskStations by logging in to the host server, and you can also view the timeline of each camera.

Notifications

By setting up email account and SMS authentications, Surveillance Station will send you email or SMS notifications when critical events occur. On the Settings page you can further decide which events to trigger notifications, thus avoid paying SMS fee for events you do not wish to be notified.

Privilege

With privilege setting, you can grant system users permission to access Surveillance Station 3 as an administrator or a spectator. Users with administrator privilege have full authority on Surveillance Station 3. A spectator can only watch live view and event timeline but cannot edit the camera settings.

Log

Critical events such as camera disconnection or changes on the camera settings will be recorded in logs. You can view the logs and manually delete/save the log for further use. When the log size reaches its limit, the oldest record will be removed to save space.

Camera License

Each DiskStation comes with one camera license. For DiskStation models that support multiple cameras, you can purchase Synology Camera License Packs to install additional cameras.
