How to set up privilege policy on Synology Surveillance Station
Overview
Surveillance Station provides users to configure their privileges in conform to their surveillance needs. By assigning privileges to users, you can allow or restrict access to cameras and settings within Surveillance Station. Users can be assigned as Manager or Spectator for monitoring. Administrator can assign specific camera to target member by simply assigning different privileges.
This article will guide the basics of assigning privileges and applying privilege profile to DSM users in Synology Surveillance Station.

1. Before You Start
This article assumes the following:
- You have users created under DSM with access to Surveillance Station application.
- Your IP camera has been setup and is ready for use in Surveillance Station
- DSM admin or a user belonging to the administrators group should log in to DSM and go to Main Menu > Control Panel > Application Privileges to assign Surveillance Station privilege to DSM users.
- DSM admin or a user belonging to the administrators group will not be listed on this page.
2. Assign Privilege
All DSM users will be granted privilege profiles. DSM admin or a user belonging to the administrators group can also create new privilege profiles.
To create a new privilege profile:
- Click Profile Management and then click

- Do the following to enter profile settings:
- Enter the name of the privilege profile.
- Select a privilege type from the Type drop-down menu:
- Manager can manage all Surveillance Station functions except for camera license management.
- Spectator can only watch live view and event playback but cannot edit camera settings.
- Tick the checkboxes to authorize included users to manage selected cameras, a camera group or cameras from a client.
- Click Save and then click Close.
To edit a Privilege Profile:
- Click Profile Management and then select the profile you want to edit.
- Make changes to the settings.
- Click Save and then click Close.
To delete privilege profiles:
- Click Profile Management and then select the profile you want to delete.
- Click
and then click Yes. - Click Save and then click Close.
3. Apply Privilege Profile to DSM Users
After privilege profiles are created, DSM admin or a user belonging to the administrators group can apply the newly-created profiles to selected DSM users.
To apply a profile to DSM users:
- Select the users to which you want to grant a privilege profile. You can press "Ctrl" or "Shift" for multiple selections.
- Right-click any of the users and click Edit.
- Choose a privilege profile from the drop-down menu, and then click OK.
To change the privilege profile of a user:
- Select the user you want to manage, and then click Edit.
- Choose a privilege profile from the Profile name drop-down menu.
- Click OK.
