One Rock implemented Synology Disk Stations both onsite and offsite for further data protection.

The Company

One Rock Studio is full service photography and entertainment company in the Baltimore, Maryland area. Specializing in wedding, event and sports photography and videography, One Rock produces high quality images and video for a wide variety of people and events.

The Challenge

When your business is based solely on digital media, ensuring the safety and accessibility of your files is a top priority. To protect their data, One Rock needed a safe backup solution to guard against loss of these critical files. Remote access to their data was extremely important to a company that spends a large portion of time doing their business on-site at weddings, sporting events, and other outdoor locations.

"In order to safeguard our business we needed a system that was able to be redundant and provide our photos to us no matter where we are," said Michael Goldman, partner at One Rock Studio.

When it comes to finding a backup solution that is cost-effective and doesn’t compromise on reliability or features it can be a difficult challenge for a small business.

The Solution

One Rock turned to Synology Disk Stations to deliver the features and performance they needed on a budget that they could afford.

Data Management

"We evaluated a few other units and for the cost and the features we needed Synology had the only system that was able to provide a solution within our budget," says Goldman.

As their data management solution, One Rock Studio implemented two DS508s and one DS209 to provide an accessible, redundant backup for their photos and business files. The DS209 is used to store data onsite, while each DS508 is located in a different location to protect against theft or damage. Current client data is stored on the DS209 and backed up to the offsite DS508s, which also houses past client data for future reference or reorders.

The Synology Disk Station RAID features keeps One Rock’s data safe from disk failure and the built-in FTP server provides the One Rock team access to the photos in or out of the studio.

Multimedia Features

Goldman has found more uses than expected with the included management firmware, Disk Station Manager 2.1. "The photo album software has been used extensively when we show work to our customers," he said. Photo Station 3 instantly organizes and displays photos over the internet by just dropping the files in a folder in the Disk Station.

One Rock currently relies heavily upon the photo sharing and backup features of the Synology Disk Station, other features of Disk Station Manager 2.1are ideal for small businesses as the device can also host websites, stream audio, act as a central surveillance hub, and be a mail server.

Customer Benefits

For a photography business like One Rock Studio who create and share their product in digital format, protecting their data is vital to the future of their business.

"We were able to be more productive because we could trust the unit we were storing our photos on," Goldman said.

Synology Disk Stations are able to provide One Rock with secure backup, unmatched accessibility, and a sleek presentation platform for their digital photography. These features give Goldman at the team at One Rock the tools necessary to continue to grow their company.
