““Synology is letting us do more with less, and that is a huge asset. It’s the ability of the Synology to multi-task that’s really been the productivity booster for us.” – Dan Peterson, Technical Support Specialist at Serryn Network Services

The Organization

Serryn Network Services is a small network security consulting company located in Whitewater, Wisconsin, which provides support for Checkpoint Firewalls. Founded in 2002, this company has been serving everyone from small businesses to large corporations. They work as consultants, helping their clients resolve their firewall issues. To do so, they use high-tech IT equipment, which they manage on their own.

The Challenge

In order to help their clients, and keep the business running smoothly, Serryn Network Services had been using three different servers- one for iSCSI, one for FTP and another for backups. However, running three servers at the same time was costing them a fortune, and eating up their resources, as they needed to spend a lot of time managing all three servers. Fed up with all the costs and limitations, the company decided to go on the search for an upgrade that would fit within their small business budget.

“I was tasked with finding an enterprise NAS or SAN solution for less than an SMB price,” said Dan Peterson, a Technology Support Specialist at Serryn Network Services. “The biggest issue we were facing was that as a small business we have a small budget, yet the demands we place on our hardware is similar to a company several times larger than us”. The solution would have to be fast, have a large storage capacity, and be able to do all the things that their three servers were currently doing – including hosting iSCSI Targets for virtual storage, FTP hosting, Time Machine backups for Mac Computers, and allow for syncing between production and Disaster Recovery site. It had to be an all-in-one solution, but at an affordable cost.

The Solution

Dan decided to try out Synology. He wanted to make sure the storage array could do all the tasks he needed before he advised the company to go for one of the more powerful RackStations. He tried out one of the smaller desktop versions to make sure that it could deliver all the things he needed – and was pleased. Based on his positive evaluation of the smaller Synology DiskStation, the company decided on the RS3412RPxs.

“The RS3412RPxs replaced three rather old storage solutions while giving us nearly triple the storage amount, freeing up nearly half of our rack and dropping power consumption by 75%.” Dan was also pleased with the software, DiskStation Manager. He was happy to learn that the software was always improving, bringing new features for IT Admins such as bandwidth throttling, which Dan used to reduce their bandwidth cost in their datacenter as well.

Needless to say, Dan and his company were very pleased, “Synology was able to give us enterprise performance at a price that a small business can afford. Because of this, myself and my co-workers, at any chance we get, we suggest to people that they purchase a Synology.”
