    • Disk Station Manager 2.2 has been certified DLNA compliant (certified on DS209 and will work with all Disk Station models). It further ensures interoperability between Synology Disk Station and your DLNA home devices.
    • Supports customization of the DMA browsing menu for your multimedia files. 3 default menu styles are provided and you can customize 3 more styles based on personal preferences, including using iTunes smart playlist.
    • Supports streaming music, photo and video with Windows Media Player on Vista.
    • Supports MP3 and M4A metadata indexing including composer, disc number, track number, album artwork, and comment.
    • Supports predefining a image to be displayed as the album cover for music files without an embedded album artwork.

  2. iPhone Support: 2 iPhone applications are available on Apple® App Store for free:
    • DS photo allows you to easily upload photos from iPhone/iPod touch to your Disk Station and instantly share it out to the world.
    • DS audio allows you to stream and enjoy the music stored on Disk Station with your iPhone/iPod touch where Internet is available.
  3. Mobile Photo Station & File Station: Supports viewing photos and reading supported file formats stored on Disk Station with a mobile device whenever the Internet is available. Windows Mobile 6.0 (Internet Explore Mobile or Opera 9.0 and onward), iPhone OS 2.2.1 and onward (Safari) or Symbian OS 9.1, S60 3rd Edition and onward are required.
  4. iSCSI(1): Designate portion of your volume space to be an iSCSI target, and expand it later at your preference. You can assign up to 10 iSCSI targets on each Disk Station.
  5. Firewall: The built-in firewall function allows you to decide which service or IP address are allowed to access the Disk Station and prevent uninvited connections.
  6. SNMP: SNMP protocol support allows you to monitor Disk Station with network management softwares.
  7. Auto Block: Auto block function protects your Disk Station from hostile attacks. IP address with pre-defined number of failed login attempts will be blocked and cannot access the server until manually removed from the block list by admin. The failed login attempts include connections via management UI, File Station, FTP, SSH, Telnet, rsync and mobile devices including iPhone.
  8. Resource Monitor: Resource monitor allows you to easily monitor Disk Station's CPU usage, memory usage, network flow and volume usage.
  9. Mac OS X Time Machine Support: Simply choose a destination folder on your Disk Station, and you can easily back up data of your Mac OS to the server.
  10. SMS Notification: By setting up SMS notification, you will be notified immediately if any critical event occurs on your Disk Station.
  11. Windows ADS Support(2) Enhancements:
    • Supports large size domain environment with up to 100,000 domain users and 100,000 domain groups.
    • Advanced setting options help the server to join domain more easily.
    • Supports user home function for domain users. When enabled, a private home folder will be created automatically upon the domain user's login.
    • Supports setting up sub-folder privileges for domain user/group in File Station.
  12. Surveillance Station Enhancements:
    • Flexible live view layout management allows you to choose from 1 channel, 2x2, 3x3, 4x4 grids, sequential rotation and other options.
    • Enhanced live view and event playback allows you to digitally zoom in/out, drag and move the frame or slow/fast forward the video when the event is playing.
    • Events Sync Playback allows you to simultaneously watch events recorded at the same time from up to 4 different cameras.
    • Centralized Management allows you to simultaneously watch the live-view of cameras installed on multiple Disk Stations, or watch the event timeline of a camera installed on another Disk Station.
    • 54 more camera models from 10 renowned brands are newly included in the support list, making the total 193. View the complete list here.
    • Supports MJPEG and MPEG-4 over RTP streaming.
    • Supports SMS notification, allowing you to receive an immediate notice upon the occurrence of designated critical events.
    • Camera support numbers are increased to 8 and 12 on certain 9-series models(3).
  13. iTunes Server Enhancements:
    • Supports video files sharing for MOV, MP4 and M4V formats.
    • Supports MP3 and M4A metadata indexing including composer, disc number, track number, album artwork and comment.
  14. Download Station Enhancements:
    • Supports creating multiple download tasks by entering more than one HTTP, FTP or ed2k links at a time, or upload a text file containing multiple links.
    • Supports RSS and RapidShare download.
    • For BitTorrent download, private tracker support is improved.
    • For BitTorrent/HTTP/FTP/NZB download, a Time Left column is added for each task to indicate the estimated time before the task's completion.
    • For eMule download, eMule protocol obfuscation is supported.
    • Supports assigning the download service location to an external hard drive(4).
    • E-mail notification upon the download task's completion is supported.
  15. Photo Station Enhancements:
    • Supports video files sharing for MP4, DAT, M4V and QT formats.
    • Added 3 new Photo Station templates and 5 more Blog banners. Thumbnails quality of newly added photos is improved.
  16. Web Station Enhancement: Added PHP cache option.
  17. File Station Enhancement: All files upload/download transfer will be recorded when File Station transfer log is enabled.
  18. Shared Folder Privilege Setting Enhancement: More flexible privileges setting by subdividing write-only privilege into 3 options (1) disable directory browsing (2) disable file downloading (3) disable modification of existing files. The rules apply to File Station and FTP file transfer.

  4. AJAX-based File Station 2: File Station 2 has a brand new interface that utilizes AJAX technology and brings you the familiar Windows experience with drag-n-drop and right-click actions. In addition, File Station 2 further introduces features including multiple files selection and upload(1) (up to 100 files), multiple files download, remote compressed files extraction, search and files/folders direct download URL.
  5. AJAX-based Surveillance Station 2: The Surveillance Station 2 newly supports additional 69 IP cameras of renowned brands, including AXIS, ACTi, Vivotek, SparkLAN and TRENDnet (read the completed compatible IP camera list here). Audio streaming(2) is supported in live view, recording and playback (MPEG4 only). The auto-discovery feature helps you search the UPnP supported IP cameras within LAN to simplify IP camera setup.
  6. Sub-folder Privileges Setting: With the elegant Linux-style privileges, authorized users are free to modify privileges of folders, sub-folders, and files with the help of File Station 2.
  7. Enhanced User Management: "User Home" feature automatically creates a home folder and personal website address for each user; this greatly minimizes admin's effort to assign shared folder for each user. The application privilege setting allows the admin to flexibly determine applications (FTP services, File Station, Audio Station, Download Station and Surveillance Station) each user can access. In addition, the admin is now able to set up share folders privileges for each user.
  8. Enhanced Audio Station: Upon proper applications privileges setting, non-admin users will be able to login Audio Station and enjoy the music in web streaming mode. Advanced privilege settings are available in Audio Station including allowing non-admin users to use USB mode and manage the playlists.
  9. Enhanced Photo Station 3: The search function helps visitors find the photo/album more easily. Furthermore, other than the photo files, now you can choose to back up photo database via Local or Network Backup, including photo's extended information: titles, descriptions, and comments from visitors.
  10. Enhanced Backup: The new backup wizard integrates Network Backup or Local Backup to simplify backup process. Other than Local Backup, Local Restore is now available; In addition, block level backup is supported in Network Backup. MySQL database backup is also supported now.
  11. Enhanced eMule Download: The eMule download engine is upgraded to support files larger than 4GB.
  12. Case-Sensitive File System: Case-sensitive file system is automatically supported after firmware upgrade to provide better Linux and Mac compatibility.
  13. Network UPS: Now you can use a single UPS to protect multiple Synology NAS Servers within the LAN from power failure.
  14. Dual-Printer Support: Synology NAS Servers now support up to 2 USB printers at the same time.
  15. Linux Version Assistant: A Linux version Synology Assistant is now available to help you easily search Synology NAS Servers within the LAN environment.

[Browser-specific]

  1. On all browsers, the File Station 2 supports up to 2GB single file upload. This is due to browsers' limitation.
  2. On Internet Explorer browser, the File Station 2 supports up to 4GB single file download. This is due to Internet Explorer's limitation.
  3. When using HTTPS connection on the non-IE browsers, the File Station 2 does not support multiple files upload.

[Backup]

  1. System configuration backed up on Disk Station Manager 2.0 might not be able to be restored on Disk Station Manager 2.1.

    1. Alarm Recording Support: Other than Continuous Recording and Motion Detection Recording modes, a new option of Alarm Recording mode is now supported. In Alarm Recording mode, Surveillance Station records videos when receiving external I/O signals from the camera.
    2. MPEG-4 Support: Other than M-JPEG video format, MPEG-4 format streaming and video recording is also supported, which significantly reduces the storage capacity requirement.
    3. Megapixel Support: Depending on the IP cameras capability, megapixel video live-view and recording can be supported.
    4. Snapshot: Snapshot taking in live-view and event play back is available.
    5. Enhanced Management: Admin can go to Privilege page of Surveillance Station and grant other users the privileges of managing Surveillance Station, simply watch the live-view and events, or nothing at all. In addition, admin can now monitor the live-view on full screen, and manage the cameras by enabling/disabling cameras without deleting all the settings. Event recording can be stopped at anytime and played back immediately.
    6. Enhanced Performance: Depending on the IP cameras capability, admin can choose to implement the motion detection by camera rather than Surveillance Station, which further enhances the system performance.
    7. Additional 45 IP Cameras Support: 45 more IP camera models from Panasonic, Vivotek and LevelOne are added into the support list. Synology Surveillance Station now support up to almost 70 IP camera models in total from 7 renowned brands. Read the detailed camera list here.
  7. Enhanced Local Backup: Enables multiple scheduled Local Backup tasks with the assistance of Local Backup wizard, the backup destination can be either the external HDD or the shared folders on the internal HDD. From now on, the external attached HDD (EXT3 or FAT format) can be used as storage and backup disk simultaneously.
  8. Enhanced FTP Server: The advanced privilege of "write-only" is supported. In addition, limiting the maximum connections from each individual IP provides better bandwidth management together with the bandwidth restriction option. UTF-8 filename support which better handles multilingual characters is also optional.
  9. New Download Station 2: Other than BitTorrent/FTP/HTTP download, new download channels eMule and NZB are now supported by the Download Station 2. In addition, partial files download from BitTorrent is also allowed. Download Station 2 is now separated from the management UI and stands on an individual webpage.
  10. Enhanced File Station: Admin can designate his/her own File Station with a different port as well as customize webpage banner, so that users will login the File Station independent from the NAS server management UI. The advanced privilege of "write-only" is also supported.
  11. Enhanced Audio Station: No USB speakers are required for playing music stored on the server anymore. The new streaming mode streams .mp3 audio files to the client PC(1) and delivers by built-in speakers. A built-in playlist "Random100" will randomly choose and play 100 songs each time it is selected.
  12. Enhanced Photo Station 3: Admin can now customize Photo Station 3 background and theme in his/her own fashion, and sort photos and albums according to personal preference in the Settings area. Language setting is also modifiable based on his/her choice. The media RSS feed is now supported. Moreover, users can now enjoy the Photo Station 3 with Cooliris (formerly known as PicLens) dazzling full screen 3-dimensional photo slideshow(2). FLV video files are now supported.
  13. Enhanced Windows ADS Compatibility: Better handles the Windows domains especially for those with a large number of domain users. Windows Server 2008 is also supported now.
  14. Enhanced Mac OS Usability: Synology NAS servers will be automatically found by Bonjour protocol, including Finder and Safari browser (Bookmarks > Bonjour).
  15. Enhanced iTunes Server: M4A and M4P file formats are correctly indexed on iTunes server with tags information. WAV and AIF files are now supported to be streamed, but metadata may not be indexed.
  16. Enhanced Hibernation: Improved hibernation mechanism is introduced particularly to solve the problem of Western Digital Green Power series HDDs' not sleeping while in hibernation.
  17. Perl Support: Perl 5.8.6 is formally included in Synology Disk Station Manager 2.0.
  18. Package Management & Logitech SqueezeCenter Support: The Logitech SqueezeCenter will be supported on Synology NAS servers after installing the SqueezeCenter package (download here) provided by Synology. Users can easily install and uninstall this package, run and stop the SqueezeCenter service on Synology NAS servers on the [System > Package Management] page.

Special Notes

  1. Along with the Download Station 2 enhancement, the previous Download Redirector versions will no longer work with Synology Disk Station Manager 2.0. To execute the download tasks on desktop, please download and install the latest Download Redirector (v.720) instead.
  2. After firmware upgrade and reboot, the system will re-create all thumbnails (bigger in size than the previous ones) for all photos stored in "photo" shared folder. This process might take some time, depending on the amount of files.

Major Changes of Synology Data Replicator 3

  1. AJAX Management UI: The Synology Disk Station Manager 2.0 has a brand new management interface that utilizes AJAX technology, which brings you the familiar Windows experience. New improvements include:
    • Six wizards on Home page to help you finish tasks quickly.
    • My Favorites zone to let you drag up to 10 of the most frequently used functions to the Home page.
    • Organized application links on the top right corner to allow you to switch between File Station, Audio Station, and Surveillance Station without logging out first.

  2. Surveillance Station: Turn your Synology Disk Stations into a network video recorder (NVR) by connecting IP cameras to the network, and recording videos to the Synology Disk Stations. On Surveillance Station, you can watch the camera monitoring area on a real-time basis, and set up cameras recording details, including schedule, recording frame rate, motion-detection area, and resolution. Also you will be able to view and manage the recorded video clips. Synology Surveillance Station support 1 IP camera by default, and more cameras support is available by using Synology Camera License (contact your reseller for details).   4. (3724) Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 Support: Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 are now supported as digital media adapter devices. You can browse and stream multimedia contents stored on the Synology Disk Stations to your stereo system and TV set using Sony PS3 or Microsoft Xbox 360.

Major Changes of Synology Data Replicator 3

  1. (572) (685) (715) Multilingual Support: 5 more languages are supported: Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch and Russian.
  2. (548) Backup Target limitation is removed: In addition to Synology products, now you can choose any other accessible location to be the backup target, including USB drive, USB flash drive, or any storage device with a valid IP.
  3. (664) E-Mail Synchronization Backup: Now you are free to synchronize e-mails periodically, despite the size of files. You can set the interval of each e-mail synchronization backup task to 1, 2, 3 hours, etc.
  4. (654) Auto-resume Synchronization Backup: Synchronization task will be automatically resumed when factors that cause abnormal suspension are resolved, including network disconnection or PC going into hibernation mode.
  5. (564) Locked-Files Backup: No need to close opened files before each backup. Even opened files that are being read or written can still be backed up.

Limitation & Known Issues

  • On Mac OS, upgrade firmware from version prior to Synology Disk Station Manager 2.0-0547 with Safari 3 may not succeed. In this case, users are suggested to upgrade firmware with Safari 2.
  • Restore Points made by Synology Data Replicator II are only available in Synology Data Replicator 3 after executing Backup at least once.
  • Refer to "Limitation & Known Issues for all versions" for other limitations.

Limitation & Known Issues for all versions

  1. On all browsers, single file upload is limited to 2GB for File Station 2. This is due to browsers' limitation.
  2. On Internet Explorer browser, single file download is limited to 4GB for File Station 2. This is due to Internet Explorer's limitation.
  3. On DSM 2.0-0590 and onward, Synology Surveillance Station is officially supported on Internet Explorer, while part of the functions might be limited on other browsers including Firefox.
  4. USB Disk Limitation:
    • FAT32 format: is portable, easy and convenient to use on Windows and Mac OS X. Mac OS 9 does not support FAT32.
    • Native format: is the most reliable format. USB disks with such format can be used among different Synology products. The USB disk must be larger than 1GB.
