Local Backup

Local Backup provides Synology products with the ability to back up files to externally attached USB or SATA drives using an USB or eSATA cable.

Setup steps:

  1. Connect an external USB or SATA hard drive to the USB/SATA port on your Synology product.
  2. Open a browser window, and point your browser to http://SynologyProduct-IP:5000.
  3. Login to the Disk Station Manager using the admin account.
  4. Go to External Devices > USB Disk or External Devices > eSATA Disk.
  5. Select the connected hard disk and click Format.
  6. Format the connected hard disk for Backup purposes.
  7. Select the file system type you wish to format into.
  8. After formatting, go to the Backup > Local Backup page and click on Backup Settings.
  9. Follow the on-screens instructions to select the folders you wish to back up and to setup a backup schedule.
